Starting off today with a RIP for actor Nicky Katt, who may not be the most recognizable name, but I remember him from movies like Knockaround Guys, TV Shows like Boston Public, and he was also featured in The Dark Knight. He was 54.
The next piece of business is that Apple Plus has cancelled Mythic Quest after 4 seasons, but is planning to upload a revised season finale this week that will offer a bit more closure for the series.
TV Shows returning this week include The Last Of Us (HBO/Sun,MAX/Mon with audio description) and Law And Order: Organized Crime (Peacock/Thurs), as well as new premieres like Government Cheese (Apple Plus/Wed), and the premiere of Wolfman (Peacock/Fri).
TV Shows Watched: Yellowjackets: S3E9 (Paramount Plus) with audio description, The Connors: S6E3 (Hulu) with audio description, Win Or Lose: S1E8 (Disney Plus) with audio description, Grosse Pointe Garden Society: S1E7 (Peacock) with audio description,Pulse: S1E3 (Netflix) with audio description, Wolf King: S1E5 (Netflix) with audio description, Long Bright River: S1E6 (Peacock) with audio description), Got to Get Out Of Here: S1E1 (Hulu) with audio description, The Great North: S5E? (Hulu) no audio description, SNL: Lady Gaga (Peacock) with audio description, Matlock: S1E? (Paramount Plus) with audio description, Abbott Elementary: S4E21 (Hulu) with audio description, and Hacks: S1E1 (MAX) with audio description.
Best Episode: Hacks- hands down. Talk about mixing it up. Having Deborah and Ava at each others throats right at the start is a perfect change up in the 4th season, and clearly throws a wrench in their built chemistry. I laughed my ass off during the first episode, which really needs to get Hannah that Supporting Actress Emmy for once. How has she not won yet?
Runner Ups: yellowjackets, Abbott Elementary- These two shows come close. Yellowjackets really is going all out right at the end of the season, killing off two characters, one in each timeline. Then, Abbott featured the great fight for Ava’s job. There was hilarious stuff in Abbott, like the State Farm joke, but also some tough moments in Yellowjackets (RIP *spoiler*).
Worth Mentioning: Win Or Lose, Long Bright River, Matlock- I watched so much TV today that on any normal day, these shows might have made the cut. their episodes were all strong, but are all the next tier down in terms of greatness. Win Or Lose has a solid finale that brought everything together, long Bright River started to incorporate Truman more and at Christmas, and Matlock threw Maddie a curveball.
Best Audio description: Yellowjackets- Not only does it balance two timelines, but it slips in and out of reality. One character found themselves really experiencing the dream world more than others this week. I really enjoyed that final plane sequence, but also so many little moments along the way, from stabbing someone in the eye, to mentioning the fuel gauge, to shaving chocolate on a martini, and a moment when someone gets scared enough they pee themselves. This track seemed to hit every major visual cue.
Runner Up: Win or Lose- Another exceptional track as the finale wrangled all the ideas from the previous seven episodes into one. It left a lot to be described as everyone seemed to be living a heightened state of reality.
Worth Mentioning: Long Bright River, Wolf King,SNL- All three shows would round out a Top 5. Three reliable audio description tracks that stand above the rest.
Best Performance: Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder (Hacks)- Nothing beats the tension that Deborah and Ava have right at the beginning. The rest of the cast was excellent, but these two are getting to explore new levels of their characters. Arguably, Deborah is incapable of self reflection, as she doesn’t realize she caused this. She has a moment with Marcus, who tells her he’s leaving, where she gets angry because everyone leaves. she’s been mad at Ava the whole time, but Deborah is the one who keeps pushing Ava away. it was Ava who found a way to stay. it is also fun to watch Ava stand up for herself, and also have to deal with Deborah’s repeated attacks and HR complaints.
Runner Up: The Ensemble Of Yellowjackets- Really, both the past and present cast have moments where they can stand out. The past is dealing with the decision to not leave, which seems to be rocking this ensemble to the core. Plus, Teen Shauna is a horrible person, which seems to be bleeding into the present as Shauna is also a very unhinged individual. But, the fact that none of the Yellowjackets knew this character they discovered in Episode 8 was alive, it really makes you wonder… how? Also, who doesn’t love watching father and daughter bond over their love of weed?
Worth Mentioning: Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary), Amanda Seyfried (Long Bright River), Kathy Bates (Matlock), Will Forte (Win or Lose), and Mikey Day (SNL)- Some of these are obvious, as Brunson, Seyfried, and Bates are highly reliable in their respective shows. Forte made a perfect dad who ended up as the focus for the culmination of Win or lose. And, Mikey absolutely deserves recognition for Lord Gaga. That was some funny stuff, and veered into the scathing when he clearly was targeting Weekend Update co-host Colin Jost.
Best Moment Of Audio Description: The Friendly’s Sketch (SNL)- Honestly, there was a lot happening here. The sketch was going off the rails, but also felt like the most expensive sketch they’ve ever done. Masks, statues, costumes, and madness. The audio description on this really seemed to hit all the marks.
Runner Up: Lotte Is Forest Jesus (Yellowjackets)- In one of the moments that seemingly has no meaning yet and can’t possibly be a spoiler as both Travis and Lotte made it out of the woods and had adult counterparts, we see him set a trap, not knowing for who. Then, we realize it is for Lotte. Although, we see the trap works, yet when she steps on it, nothing happens. She just stands there. She should have fallen through to her death, but apparently she walks through the forest like she’s floating across water.
Worth Mentioning: Hot Air Balloon (Win Or Lose)- As Will Forte’s coach gets more and more upset, he fills up with air and floats around, threatening to destroy the whole baseball field.
Worst of…- Abbot Elementary- ViTac has been doing the audio description for this for at least the last two seasons, and Vito has been doing the narration. In this most recent episode, Ava interacts with a man who is given the description of being just some older man. Now, if the same writer was being used for Abbott across the board, they would have recognized that Keith David has already appeared on the show before, and it was already revealed that this is Ava’s father. Instead, she has an emotionally pointed conversation with a stranger, because his character description never acknowledges who he is, despite him having already appeared as a guest star. So, when they are clearly having a father/daughter conversation, you would think someone might have picked up on this? no?This isn’t hard. He has actually been featured THIS SEASON as her father. you don’t even have to have some deep knowledge of every guest star over four seasons. you just need to have a writer competent enough to remember he’s already been seen on the show, just a few weeks ago.
Runner Up: The Great North- For not having audio description, a sin I consider less offensive than the really simple solution above.
Worth Mentioning- Matlock- there were these little flashback montages that weren’t described. I would have loved to see it there, but I didn’t need it quite as much, because I remembered all the previous references. It is literally “worth mentioning”, because I’m not sure that is true for everyone. Those flashbacks might have just been confusing to someone else.
