The Small Screen Diaries- The Weekly Rankings

Another week, and another reminder of the shows across my broad watchlist. Joining the list this week are The Handmaids Tale (Hulu), North of North (Netflix), Hacks (MAX), Got To Get Out (Hulu), Jurassic World: Chaos Theory (Netflix), and Lazarus (MAX).

WINNER: Hacks (MAX) with audio description- this was a tough decision. I had two award winning juggernauts returning, and The Studio really deserves to stay on top. But, ultimately, I love the premiere of Hacks, which puts Deborah and Ava on a completely different playing field, while also bolstering the supporting cast and giving them all stuff to do. Could this win the Emmy this year? Yes. But more importantly, can we remember to vote for Hannah Einbinder?

Runner Up: The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu) with audio description- I made it through the first three episodes of the final season. The performances were very much on point. I missed this show a lot, and seeing everyone return to form was brilliant. I noted several standouts over three days, and running this against Hacks makes for a very difficult choice.

#3- The Studio (Apple plus) with audio description- Really, this only slipped because after 4 seasons of Hacks and 6 on The Handmaid’s Tale, I’m just more invested. Though, it should be noted that this show debuted on top, and is this high with only 4 episodes under its belt. That speaks volumes about the quality of the show. the audio description though really struggled this last episode.

#4- Yellowjackets (Paramount Plus) with audio description- the penultimate episode of the season saw a death in the past and present, but how will this all affect their future? The cast is terrific, and Emmy voters should take a good hard look at the ensemble beyond Melanie Lynskey, because not only are others like Tawny Cypress deserving of recognition, but some of the young cast is on fire this season.

#5- The Righteous Gemstones (MAX) with audio description- I had a real world conversation about this show, unprompted. People know I watch a lot of TV and Film, and someone just wanted to talk to me about this show. It made me so happy to know I wasn’t alone in my deep affection for the Gemstone clan.

#6- Last week Tonight (MAX) no audio description- highest rated show with no audio description. I’m proud of the work Oliver did last week, and JK Rowling can go to Azkaban.

#7- From (MGM Plus) with audio description- I still need to start Season 2, but no rush, as I’m playing catch up.

#8- The Residence (Netflix) with audio description- I’m halfway through. I’m glad Kylie Minogue got something to do. This last episode really helped flesh out the ensemble a lot more and left a lot of potential killers out there, even if they might be zeroing in on one.

#9- Abbott Elementary (Hulu) with audio description- Only one episode left in the season. Watching the gang rally for Ava was a weirdly long time coming. The whole cast worked well, but I loved the little quips like Lisa Ann Walters talking about admitting guilt, or Tyler James Williams excellent reaction to his paycheck.

#10- The White Lotus (MAX) with audio description- All things considered, this is where it finishes. I thought the show was strong, but not as strong as Season 2. I think it has a bit of a balancing problem in terms of cast, giving some people a ton to do, and clear paths to the Emmys, while others seem almost forgotten about. The audio description was fantastic for the finale though. That blender scene was terrific. I’m most looking for nominations for Walton Goggins and Jason Isaacs, but I suspect Sam Rockwell, Parker Posey, and Carrie Coon will come along at a minimum.

#11- St Dennis Medical (Peacock) with audio description- If the comedy category wasn’t so stacked, I would think it had a shot at Best Comedy Series, but with all the excellent comedy contenders, it is a bit hard. the tough thing is that this is actually a comedy, whereas a growing number of people keep wondering how The Bear is allowed to compete, and perform so well, in the comedy category, when it is obviously not a comedy.

#12- #12- Mythic Quest (Apple Plus) with audio description- I would have loved a final season, not a revision of the final episode. This is the last time this show will appear on the list, because even if I did check out the alternate ending, I wouldn’t put it back here just for that. I have a lot of respect for the MQ team.

#13- Pop culture Jeopardy (Amazon) with audio description- I didn’t actually watch a new episode last week.

#14- Jurassic World: Chaos Theory (Netflix) with audio description- I’m a big fan of the animated Jurassic World gang. I think this show is easily more entertaining than at least two of the films, likely more. I’m only 1 episode into the new season, so it will take me up to the release of the new Jurassic film in theaters.

#15- Elzabeth (PAramount Plus) with audio description- They tried pairing her up with a new partner, and I’m curious to see how that will work out for her. one of the best network shows.

#16- Dope Thief (Apple Plus) with audio description- The Brian Tyree Henry show has managed to remain suspenseful while throwing in darkly comedic tones, which is really hard to pull off. Any Emmy prospects? probably not, though Henry wouldn’t be a bad choice.

#17- The Bondsman (Amazon) with audio description- Two episodes in on Kevin Bacon’s new horror series, and it is a blast. It reminds me of something like Ash vs the Evil dead, balancing humor with gore. There really isn’t anything like this on right now. Hopefully, Amazon will stick with it.

#18- ghosts (Paramount Plus) with audio description- Another steady and reliable sitcom I enjoy watching as much as possible.

#19- Midcentury Modern (Hulu) with audio description- Rising after the second episode. A strong ensemble that cracks me up. I’m dreading the exit of Linda Lavin who is perfect here. Emmy nomination? Can we get her a posthumous Emmy nom?

#20- The daily Show (Paramount Plus) no audio description- I watched one of the four episodes this week.

#21- Have I Got News for You (MAX) no audio description- I think this either just wrapped, or will be wrapping its second season. Hopefully, it is renewed.

#22- Matlock (Paramount Plus) with audio description- for a while, this show seemed lost in the weeds, but it has been coming back around toward the end of the season and becoming interesting again.

#23- Happy Face (Paramount Plus) with audio description- This is basically even with last week. Anna Leigh Ashford still carries the show, but they have done a nice job of supporting her in the cast.

#24- Top chef (Peacock) with audio description- I’m a long time fan, so the sow is hanging on for me, especially now that it has audio description.

#25- Running Point (Netflix) with audio description- A cool cameo this past week, and I’m 7 episodes deep. Will they make the championship?

#26- Deli Boys (Hulu) with audio description- this show has risen every week. I’m getting more and more interested. It is funny, brutal, and deserves some attention. The audio description is also really good.

#27- Good American Family (Hulu) with audio description- That last episode centered around Natalia gave the show a bit of an identity crisis. I know it is telling a true story, where apparently no one was convicted of anything, but playing all sides is a weird tonal shift. it makes it a little harder to follow any truth that may exist.

#28- Dying For Sex (Hulu) with audio description- Two episodes in. I want to take it higher, but i need the rest of the show to be like the second episode, and I just haven’t seen enough yet. It could jump a lot next roundup if I can clear a few more episodes.

#29- The Wheel of Time (Amazon) with audio description- A bitch to keep up with, but it has excellent audio description. there just are a lot of characters, lore, people spread out, and it feels like I should read the books. As a series, I did find Game Of Thrones more accessible, even as a non-reader.

#30- The Walking dead: Dead City (Netflix) with audio description- the only rewatch currently on the list. This should jump when I finish Season 1, and Season 2 starts May 4th (albeit without audio description).

#31- The Rookie (Hulu) with audio description- A reliable performer that has aged a little, and isn’t quite where it once was. Last week’s home invasion episode was a little nuts.

#32- Long Bright River (Peacock) with audio description- a solid drama with a strong lead female performance from Amanda Seyfried and a good mystery. I’m six episodes in.

#33- Side Quest (Apple Plus) with audio description- Only one episode left. I’ve only really loved Episode 2. Otherwise, it has been fine.

#34- Win Or lose (Disney Plus) with audio description- Finished. the anthology format made for some uneven episodes. If they bring this back, they should rotate to new characters in a new sport.

#35- Survival Of The Thickest (Netflix) with audio description- Just a steady performer in its second season. It won’t get Emmy nominations, but it is perfectly enjoyable, like XO Kitty was.

#36- Invincible (Amazon) with audio description- that excellent finale boosted it up a few more spots. Last time this is on the list for a while.

#37- The Connors (Hulu) with audio description- I’m a long time fan. I’ll be sad to see this go. It isn’t rocket science, but it is mashed potatoes. Comfort food. Comfort food you know isn’t good for you.

#38- Daredevil: Born Again (Disney Plus) with audio description- only one episode left. No change in rank from last week. It might go up a bit, depending on how the finale goes, but this season has been really uneven.

#39- SNL (Peacock) with audio description- It had slipped due to me not watching it, but I’m now up through the Lady Gaga episode, which did have its moments. I can’t remember the last time I watched an episode where every sketch worked.

#40- Tracker (Paramount Plus) with audio description- A reliable drama that just didn’t air a new episode last week.

#41- Celebrity Jeopardy (Hulu) with audio description- Had a few weeks off, and has been climbing back since returning with new episodes.

#42- Million Dolalr Secret (Netflix) with audio description- This new reality entry is kind of fun. I’m three episodes deep. the last elimination was a hilariously bad decision.

#43- The Great North (Hulu) no audio description- This last episode kept having the characters talk about fisting instead of fist fighting, and I loved how some characters were oblivious, and others mortified.

#44- American Idol (Hulu) no audio description- This show needs audio description. Some very talented voices in the Top 24. Will America vote for them? Last year, voters avoided black contestants like the plague. The ones that made the top 12 made it by wild card.

#45- The Masked Singer (Hulu) no audio description- We are down to the final six. Audio description would be nice. I never would have guessed the eliminated contestant anyway, as i didn’t know who they were.

#46- Suits: LA (Peacock) with audio description- I didn’t actually watch the new episode, though I plan on doing that today. I let it slide a bit as I do with all shows I don’t watch.

#47- Mobland (Paramount Plus) with audio description- not my instant favorite, but Guy Ritchie tried to direct the hell out of that pilot. plus, it has a few strong cast members. Taylor Sheridan might be a little overextended though.

#48- Survivor (Paramount Plus) with audio description- Fun, with well described challenges. I was a little surprised at who got the boot this week.

#49- 911 (Hulu) with audio description- Did dip a little from not having seen a new episode last week… or the week before. look, it is already renewed, I can run a few episodes behind.

#50- North Of North (Netflix) with audio description- it is cute. I’ve seen the first two episodes. Canadians will be happy to know that Netflix spring for human audio description.

#51- Lazarus (MAX) with audio description- this new anime has audio description by ViTac, which is like sounding an alarm, except it was fairly well written. I even like the narrator. the recording quality however, is ass. ASS. I said it. I don’t know it it was on delivery or upload, but it sounds like it was recorded on an older version of an iPhone. much older.

#52- Got To Get Out (Hulu) with audio description- This series is just an average reality show, but benefits from making smart casting choices like Omarosa and Spencer Pratt, to be eventually super obnoxious. I assume.

#53- Devil May cry (Netflix) with audio description- Very well described. I’m three episodes in. Last time I played a game in this franchise was on a PS2.

#54- Will Trent (Hulu) with audio description- Already renewed. I would love for this show to regain its mojo next season on a consistent basis.

#55- Krapapolis (Hulu) no audio description- Just a reliable show hanging on.

#56- Surface (Apple Plus) with audio description- i will finish the season, but I don’t think it needs a third.

#57- Wolf King (Netflix) with audio description- More animated shows are entering. I’m 5 episodes deep. This is fine. It isn’t great, but I do enjoy it a little.

#58- The Kardashians (Hulu) with audio description- I’m almost through Season 1! One episode left.

#59- Pulse (Netflix) with audio description- I’m three episodes in, and the only thing I want to know is what the complaint was, because these two seem to have been in a relationship.Otherwise, it is kind of just a basic medical drama.

#60- The Traitors: UK (Peacock) no audio description- i did just watch another episode, so I left it in the Top 60.

Danger Zone: Grimmsburg (Netflix), Berlin ER (Apple plus), Papa’s House (Paramount Plus), 1923 (Paramount Plus), Grosse Pointe Garden Society (Peacock), Cassandra (Netflix), The Leopard (Netflix)

Removed From Watchlist (For Now): Real Time With Bill Maher- I mentioned when I added it that I have a love/hate relationship, and I figured he might not stick around very long. yep. He’s the sacrifice for the week.

Say Something!
