The Small Screen Diaries- 05/24/25

Coming up this week, I’m excited for the return of And just Like That and Rick and Morty, as well as some promising new shows like Adults on FX or Department Q on Netflix. it also will be the final episode for the Handmaids Tale ever, and the season finale of the Last Of us. Captain America: Brave New World hits Disney plus on Wednesday, reality staple America’s Got Talent returns on Tuesday, and Dogman finally hits Peacock on Friday.

TV Shows Watched: nine Perfect Strangers: S2E1 (Hulu) with audio description, Sirens: S1E2 (Netflix) with audio description, Murderbot: S1E3 (Apple Plus) with audio description, Battle Camp: S1E7 (Netflix) with audio description, top Chef: S22E10 (Peacock) with audio description, Motorheads: S1E2 (Amazon) with audio description, Dark Winds: S1E1 (Netflix) listed as having audio description, but does not, The Great North: S5E10 (Hulu) no audio description, Jeopardy Masters: S3E4 (Hulu) with audio description, and Yellowstone: S5E9 (Peacock) with audio description.

If you missed yesterday’s Achievement in Awesomeness, I’m repeating it. Adrienne Barbeau makes an appearance in Duster, but what’s really cool about it (since I know others who do narration also act), is that she’s also historically referenced in the episode, and a different actress plays her. I think that’s pretty freaking cool, and I’m bringing it up again.

Best Episode: Sirens- Ugh. I’m in love with this show. The cast is terrific, the way the show keeps advancing its story, and the little twists and turns, I’m really hoping it doesn’t let me down.

Runner Up: Murderbot- I look forward to this show every single episode out. While I would like more audio description, the show does not really allow for verbose description since Skarsgard does a lot of inner thought narration as Murderbot. So, I’m always a little let down, and slightly confused or under informed, but this is right up my alley.

Worth mentioning: nine Perfect Strangers, Motorheads, Top Chef- I was worried that Nine Perfect Strangers wouldn’t work when extended to a second season. I still have reservations, but the first episode doesn’t really do much wrong, so there’s still potential to get better or worse. Motorheads is fun, if you miss the kinds of shows The WB and CW were doing for years. Top Chef is a favorite of mine, and they wrapped Last Chance Kitchen, so now everyone is eliminated with no chance of returning.

Best Audio Description: Sirens- There’s certainly a correlation often between new shows blowing me away and also having excellent audio description. I love this track. Someone give the writer a raise.

Runner Up: Yellowstone- Listen, I watched this show for the whole run without audio description until someone made it happen. i realize I’m just now getting around to finishing the post-John Dutton part, but I was never excited about these episodes. Nice to hear, who I believe is Andrew thatcher, who works a lot on Taylor Sheridan shows, and the description was good. didn’t like the episode though.

Worth Mentioning: Motorheads, Nine Perfect Strangers, Battle Camp- I’d say these three shows round out the top five. It wasn’t a day full of memorable moments, but consistent description.

Best Performance: Alexander Skarsgard (Murderbot)- Still doing some unusually hilarious work. I love when he references his favorite TV show, almost like a Trekkie would.

Runner Up: Julianne Moore (Sirens)- i feel like the best is still to come, but if I’m rotating through the top three, I loved how we started to see more of Kiki. I would have said Millie, but they sideline Simone in a closet for a lot of the episode. And, I Recognized Megan for the pilot. Logic says Millie should be next though. I love how Julianne Moore brings this classic Hollywood dame vibe to this rich and moderately eccentric character that is perceived as a villain, but really hasn’t been reinforced as one.

Worth Mentioning: Murray Bartlett (Nine Perfect Strangers), Christine Baranski (Nine Perfect Strangers), Cole Hauser (Yellowstone)- Bartlett has a small scene toward the end where you can see extreme emotion over a missing piece of luggage that reminds you why people keep casting him more and more. He’s such a reliable talent. Baranski is living her best life as a wealthy older lady with a hot young boyfriend, and zero fucks are given from her. I can’t wait to see her dialogue more with Nicole Kidman. And, cole Hauser is the only cast member who remembers what their character was like after taking a long break, so he wins. I have loved and pushed for Kelly Reilly to get an Emmy nomination for Yellowstone, but that was such poor Beth energy. Granted, the episode is throwing her heavy material, but Beth is not the kind of character who actually hears No, which is something she plays with later during community service. It would have made more sense for Casey to show up first, and not rush in, and then Beth just storms the fuck into the Governor’s mansion, because that is who Beth Dutton is. So, seeing that Cole had the exact same vibe for his character as whence we left off was enough to get him the spot. And having to watch Wes Bentley cry made no sense.

best Moment Of Audio Description: While I did enjoy these shows, I have to say, as I watch far too much, the movie I saw, which should get its own review, had the best audio description I think I’ve heard this year. Certainly top 3. So, without context, here are the five best and goriest moments from Fear Streett: Prom Queen, which is produced by IDC, and written and narrated by Liz Gutman.

Winner: Look Ma, No Hands- A brutal sequence, but him trying to open the door… priceless.

Runner Up: don’t Put Statues In Your House- Lesson learned. This one happens near the end of the film.

Runner Up 2- Dance fever- Actually not a kill sequence, but a hilarious moment where the “wolf Pack” has to do a series of dance moves, all things like “the running man” or “cabbage patch”” in a very silly sequence. there’s another dance off later, but I liked the first one the most.

Runner Up 3- You Dropped This- there’s a scene where a character loses a limb, and somehow doesn’t die, and another person returns the hacked off limb to him.

Runner Up 4:- I Have Something To Show You…- There’s a scene where a girl is walking toward her friend, and she has something to reveal under her dress. Hint: this movie is gory.

Worst Of: I’m guessing Dark Winds acquires audio description at some point on Netflix, so I’ll be seeing if I can follow the show until such point, but it is so hard to follow a show where there are supernatural elements, and characters speak in indigenous language. I want to say Navajo, but i could be wrong.

Say Something!
