TV Shows Watched: The Walking Dead: Dead City: S2E4 (AMC Plus) no audio description, Jurassic World: Chaos Theory: S3E7 (Netflix) with audio description, From: S2E2 (MGM Plus) with audio description, Drag Race All Stars: S10E3 (Paramount Plus) with audio description, Lazarus: S1E7 (MAX) with audio description, Yes Chef: S1E3 (Peacock) with audio description, The Stolen Girl: S1E4 (Disney Plus) no audio description, SNL: Jon Hamm (Peacock) with audio description, The Four Seasons: S1E6 (Netflix) with audio description, Bosch: Legacy: S3E3 (Amazon) with audio description.
Best Episode: From- After the bus arrives, eventually night will fall. And fall it does, as this horde of new people just do not understand where they are, and it is tough for the few who have stayed alive for a while to see the mistakes repeat themselves.
Runner Up: SNL- Much better sketches, a willing Jon Hamm, and a fun Lizzo made for one of the more memorable episodes of the season.
Worth mentioning: Jurassic World: Chaos Theory, Drag Race All Stars, The Stolen Girl- If you’ve read me, you know my love for the animated Jurassic series is constant. drag Race finished off the first group, and I was mostly happy with the results, although it is hilarious how well Irene is doing since she was previously eliminated first on her own season. All star? Really? I digress. And, The Stolen Girl is so good, and I’d recommend it more if Disney would just use the Canadian audio description.
Best Audio Description: Jurassic World: chaos Theory- A couple of nice moments. Not only are they making smoothie adorable, but Kenji and that crew encounter multiple dangers, and Brooklyn faces off against a dangers foe. Everything was well described.
Runner Up: From- I’m not sure why this changed hands from Season 1 to Season 2, and while From offers so much to describe, I know Season 1 was better.it does almost default, because with all the scares and gore, there’s a ton to actually describe.
Worth Mentioning: SNL, the Four Seasons, Bosch Legacy- SNl. What was that Jon Hamm intro? I’m a big proponent of complimenting the tone of the thing you are narrating, but Hamm’s introduction was so awkward. Something about him exuding atypical masculinity, and giving his age. It certainly felt like we were trying to do something, but I couldn’t tell if it was honest straight description, or an attempt to be funny. this track generally is pretty terrific now that it is balanced properly though. the Four seasons is well done, even if I don’t love the show. And Bosch Legacy’s opening sequence was appropriately creepy.
Best Performance: Boen Yang and Jon Hamm (SNL)- that sketch with the gay couple that didn’t want to discuss how they became parents was the best of some really strong sketches, and these two played so well off each other.
Runner Up: Kerry Kinney (the four Seasons)- It’s amazing how the show isn’t really funny, or that good, but the actors have managed to find ways of standing out and delivering interesting work. Ann has had a few moments, but nothing quite like her emotional collapse at the end, when she has to apologize for kissing someone she shouldn’t have, and realizing her life is a mess.
Worth Mentioning: Kim Coates (the Walking Dead: Dead city), Steve Carell (The four Seasons), Coleman Domingo (The Four Seasons)- Coats brought a different flavor than I thought he would in introducing his new character. Carell is still trying to navigate this divorce on his side, with a daughter who now calls him by his first name. And Domingo is just solid as his relationship struggles as well.
Best Moment Of Audio description: Intruder (Bosch Legacy)- I liked the whole opening sequence right up until the credits hit.
Runner Up: The Accident (Chaos Theory)- When Kenji and his crew reach the abandoned van. That sequence was really well described, especially when the danger is revealed.
Runner Up 2- The Accident (The Four seasons)- Someone gets in a little scrape, so to speak, in the episode. Loved that.
Runner Up 3: The Bus (From)- this is a two parter, the first being when the creature enters the bus, seemingly at first just to pretend to be a bus driver, and then later, when all is said and done, when one of the passengers returns to the bus and what they find.
Runner Up 4: The Cold Open (SNL)- A nice twist. it felt like James Austin Johnson was riffing a bit at times, and the people on screen with him could break character and laugh. he felt like he was trying to provoke some reactions at times, so i loved things like pointing out that Mikey Day (who isn’t supposed to be moving) shifted his weight. It felt like Johnson was slowly winning.
worst Of…- Two shows lacked audio description. the frustrating thing is that these are likely very specific and fixable issues that no one cares to actually fix. Dead city Season 1 had audio description on Netflix. So it is possible they are making audio description for this, for somewhere, that isn’t their own streaming service, which has the functionality to support audio description. The other, is a show that is an import, and it previously had audio description, so just port it over here. trust me, we are used to listening to Brit’s narrate. This is especially true on shows with British casts. George Lucas imagined a world where the force, either the dark side or the light, was the strongest in the galaxy. He’s wrong. Apathy is the strongest force. The ability to do something, to have all the tools and resources at your disposal, but to just not care enough to actually do the thing. it’s like having someone cook all your meals for you, but you can’t even be bothered to pick up the silverware when the food is right in front of you. your only task at this point is get food in mouth. The only task for these companies often is get already existing audio description to blind people. They. Do. not. Care.
