Best Episode: The Handmaids Tale- I’m surprised they didn’t go for a longer episode, or make certain choices, but this was a solid finale. I’m not sure it lived up to any hype its audience may have expected from it, but we aren’t done with this world just yet. Hopefully The testaments will be just as good.
runner Up: Etoile- With a character in the hospital, and another one making a stand against her mother, you might be surprised to learn that my favorite moment was just Cheyanne answering a young girl’s question.
Worth Mentioning: the Pitt, Bet, Ghosts- these finish out the top 5. The Pitt is getting good, and tackling some tough subjects, I love Bet and totally pick up its vibe, and Ghostss’ season finale did drop a whopper on Jay.
Best audio Description: The Handmaids Tale- Perfectly capturing and supporting the emotion and choices the actresses made.
Runner Up: The Pitt- Does a nice job of describing the medical bits happening in these hospital rooms.
Worth Mentioning: Etoile, Bet, Your friends And Neighbors- Etoile still does a lovely job with dance, Bet does a lovely job with violence, and Your Friends And Neighbors rounds out with some steamy sex.
Best Performance: Elizabeth Moss (The Handmaids Tale)- as this behemoth reaches the end of its six season run, looking at the whole series, we owe a lot to her performance and grace that she brought to June. She kept the raging fire burning when needed, but also dialed it way back in her little moments with Holly. A beautiful Emmy worthy performance.
Runner Up: Lou de Laage (Etoile)- Cheyenne has been a force this whole season, and this episode continued to support Lou’s excellent choices. from doing an interview that was quite sassy, to being vulnerable and real with a young fan, to realizing she stumbled on stage, and instead of just being willing to accept “it happens”, her level of perfectionism reflects “but not to me” as she starts to wonder if this is the beginning of her end.
Worth mentioning: Fiona Dourif (The Pitt), Yvonne Strahovsky (the Handmaids Tale), and Luke Kirby (Etoile)- Dourif is the first member of the ensemble who isn’t Noah Wyle I’ve mentioned, and her scenes as McKay were great in episode 5. She really connected with a patient on a deep level, before another doctor blew the whole thing up, which she then met with measured consequence reminding that she’s there to learn and it was a mistake but to not do it again. Yes, Serena gets a mention again. her final apology to June finally came without strings attached. And, Kirby was just excellent in all his scenes, from worrying about Nicholas in the hospital, to helping Cheyenne work through her stuff. he was funny, but at the same time clearly pulled emotionally thin.
Best Moment Of Audio Description: He’s A Squirter (The pitt)- I think the poor guy who got peed on in Episode 4 just got covered in blood when trying to fix what he thought was a simple wound.
Runner Up: where It All Began (the Handmaids Tale)- No spoilers, but the final scene of the series finale described a location in really good detail.
Runner Up 2: Will They/Won’t they: Ryan has a bet placed on him, and there’s really only one person he’d like to achieve it with. Mary tries to get him that moment, but when Ryan has it… well… the emotional understanding of this moment was done well.
Runner Up 3: the Search (Your Friends And Neighbors)- Poor guy is having his house torn apart. All the various ways it was being done was a standout.
Runner Up 4: the Package (The Handmaids Tale)- June is whisked away to join Mark for the special moment, and we don’t know immediately what or who it is. Again, no spoilers. But the description around that reveal was done well.
Worst Of: I’m not getting much out of Season 1 of Dark Winds, without audio description, which is why I stopped watching before. I’m considering leaping to Season 2, and seeing if I can follow it by missing a season, but I’ve never done that before with anything done in linear form. I don’t mind missing a season of something done anthology mode, or like a reality competition series, but this is in linear form. I should know what is happening from beginning to end.
