The Small Screen Diaries- 05/28/25

TV Shows Watched: Black Mirror: S2E1 (Netflix) with audio description, Sirens: S1E3 (Netflix) with audio description, Midcentury Modern: S1E9 (Hulu) with audio description, Overcompensating: S1E4 (Amazon) with audio description, The Second Best Hospital in The Galaxy: S1E5 (Amazon) with audio description, Destination X: S1E1 (Peacock) with audio description, 911: S8E16 (Hulu) with audio description, and America’s got Talent: Season premiere (Peacock) with audio description.

New Show Alert!- Destination X is a competition reality series where Jeffrey Dean Morgan takes 10 wannabes on a journey through Europe, where they do challenges, and have to figure out where they are. the person eliminated each week is in the bottom from doing challenges, and also their guess was furthest away from their actual location. the description is fine for a reality series, but the description of the contestants is kind of weak. The rest of the show was fine. i watched because I’m a huge fan of Morgan, and he’s his usual self here. It won’t appear on any list below, so I wanted to mention it for anyone thinking about watching. this narration is far better than the Traitors narration, but still lacks compared to some other reality shows.

Best Episode: Sirens-I’m sorry, but I love this show. It is so weird, and I just can’t stop myself from watching. Julianne Moore is terrific, and while still suggested as a villain, is still rather tame, walking a fine line between maybe she is, and maybe she isn’t.

runner Up: Midcentury modern- While 911 dealt with the death of a character, Midcentury modern dealt with the death of a cast member,n which is always a tough needle to thread. From The West wing to 8 Simple Rules, sudden loss flips the dynamic of a show. Without Linda Lavin, that is certainly true here, but they boys paid fine tribute to her.

Best Audio Description: America’s Got Talent- while this show is far less fun watching as a blind person (sorry, but it is), this audio description is trying SO HARD to not make that true. From describing contortionists, to dancers, to other kinds of variety acts, and even taking the time to translate inaudible dialogue from the audience/judges that would get subtitles, this track does A LOT. The descriptions of the talent were somewhat limited, but there was description. American Idol, your move.

Runner Up: Sirens- this show has had flawless audio description in every episode. one of my favorite tracks of the year so far.

Best Performance: Nathan Lane (Midcentury Modern)- While all three boys had to mourn, Lane is playing lavin’s son, and had more to do. He had to recount the story of how his mom died, and hold so many dramatic beats in what is typically a sitcom. It is about still figuring out when it is OK to laugh, in a show designed to laugh. but, they also can’t not address the exit of Lavin, who was fantastic in her eight episodes, and irreplaceable. He’s certainly done more heavy dramatic work, but this kind of show has a studio audience, and just doesn’t lend itself to Lane doing Angels In America.

Runner Up: Hayley Atwell (Black Mirror)- A lot of grief in these episodes. this episode Atwell was playing a woman who lost her partner, and started communicating with an AI version of him, at first to help with grieving, but it turns into something else. she had some great moments, even if the show didn’t always give her the best beats.

Best Moment Of Audio Description: So Many Acts (America’s Got Talent)- I don’t even know which one. They’re so different. But, we had a dancer doing aerial work with silks, we had a contortionist, at least two dance groups, and then whatever you would call Livewire. Just, a lot. Really some great stuff in there.

Runner Up: Do you Like What You see? (Sirens)- Loved this scene. Bathroom. No spoilers. Man, it nailed the hole mood, and supported the look.

Worst Of…- So, hilariously, I found out when i went to start season 2 of the Second Best hospital In the Galaxy, that I abandoned it halfway through its first season. I’m giving it another try, but there is a second season. i didn’t intentionally just start over. So, the loser of the day is… my memory.
