I’ve already reviewed the film once, but I was hoping to get a better grasp of the audio description for Captain America Brave New World when it hit Disney plus, but Disney Plus doesn’t want me to hear it either. The mix is awful. Some of the loud action sequences force the audio description to be inaudible. A lot of the time you’re straining. You can hear the audio description in a few of the quieter moments, so you know it is there, but it is just not mixed well. It’s a shame that this is now a representation of Disney, Marvel, and Deluxe (who produced the track, but did not create the mix).I’m very disappointed, and based on the reaction online, I’m not the only one.
TV Shows Watched: Earnhardt: S1E1 (Amazon) with audio description, Government Cheese: S1E8 (Apple Plus) with audio description, #1 Happy family USA: S1E8 (Amazon) with audio description, dept. Q: S1E1 (Netflix) with audio description, Nine perfect Strangers: S1E2 (Hulu) with audio description, Lazarus: S1E8 (MAX) with audio description, The Great north: S5E12 (Hulu) no audio description, Elzabeth: S2E? (Paramount Plus) with audio description
I also checked out Sarah Silverman: Post-Mortem (Netflix) with audio description, which is really neither a show or a movie.
NEW SHOW ALERT! Dept. Q- Netflix has a new British crime drama starring Matthew Goode leading up an investigation into a crime. I’m intentionally being vague, because one of the best things about this pilot is the misdirect it gives. Once that is behind you, it becomes a rather standard procedural. Nothing really jumped out at me in terms of performances, and the audio description was fine. I was a little bored by the end, because it starts strong, and doesn’t really hold that momentum.
new Show Alert! Earnhardt (Amazon)- Is exactly what you think it is. A docuseries on the Earnhardt family. If you want to know more ab out them, this is for you. NASCAR fans, also, other drivers are mentioned and interviews, so more broadly you’ll like this. The audio description isn’t the most engaging, but surprisingly deep in some spots, especially for a documentary style program.
Best Episode: #1 Happy Family USA- they went out on a silly bang, and I was hee for it. George W Bush was this weird wish granting genie that was also really just testing Rumi to see if he was right for bigger plans. Will we pick up where we left off in Season 2? I hope so. This is edgy comedy with perspective, and it deserves to stick around.
Runner Up: Nine Perfect Strangers- Elzabeth was so weird I can’t pick it. This somewhat uneven episode is an Ok choice, as it does feature a terrific set of performances.
Best Audio Description: Nine Perfect Strangers- we got to learn a bit more about who these people are, and Murray bartlett’s character is a former kids TV host who has this bear he keeps seeing pop up, so the audio description had this extra element it didn’t have in the premiere.
Runner Up: #1 Happy family USA- It’s just so silly. The description is quite good. I’m not a huge fan of the flat narration on such a silly series, it almost comes across as disengaged from the thing you’re working with, but I’m sure we appropriately cast this talent. Maybe he’ll watch the show, and find the funny before next season. It doesn’t have to be performative, but it shouldn’t sound like Power Of The Dog either.
Best Performance: Murray Bartlett (Nine Perfect Strangers)- As a former kids show host who got caught in a viral moment, and realized he failed teaching a generation patience and tolerance when he was then afforded none, seems to need this retreat the most. Bartlett is such a gifted actor, and this is a role he really is sinking his teeth into.
runner Up: Sarah Silverman (post Mortem)- I love her brand of comedy. I think she has such well crafted storytelling, and often great callbacks. This show was different from her previous specials, as she was clearly working some heavy topics out.
Best Moment Of Audio Description: The Introduction (Sarah Silverman: Post Mortem)- honestly, the beginning of the special, before Sarah talks, is the best time to try and get any description in. I normally don’t like the work diffuse puts out, and I’ve been hard on Vito as a narrator before, but stand up for years just was on comedy albums. Not every comic makes a good use of the stage, or seeing them on it, and this track managed to never trample her, and point out a couple of the things we did need to know from a visual standpoint, like getting glasses out of the audience. This is one of their better projects as a company.
runner Up: Rumi’s choice (Number One Happy Family USA)- A couple tiny tidbits having to do with his wish were great little things to point out, like the visible underwear when he’s still musing on his choice, to the floatation ring around his final decision. I avoided spoilers.
Worst Of… Oh, you know it is Brave New World. Disney Plus is the big loser of the day for sure. No contest. And if you’re someone sitting there thinking “but, the great North doesn’t even have audio description”, I’d point you to the streamer of choice, Hulu, and still say Disney loses.
