the Small Screen Diaries- 06/01/25

The Netflix Tutem had some interesting announcements, including that the final season of Stranger Things is dropping in three parts, starting in November, and all dropping this year. One Piece has been pushed to 2026. Nobody Wants This Season 2 was given an October date. Some of the films, like Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein and Wake up Dead Man had trailers. Did you watch?

TV Shows Watched: The Walking Dead: Dead City (AMC Plus) no audio description, Jurassic World: Chaos Theory: S3E8 (Netflix) with audio description, And just Like That: S3E1 (MAX) with audio description, Drag race All Stars: S10E4 (Paramount Plus) with audio description, The Stolen girl: S1E5 (Disney plus) no audio description, Yes chef: S1E5 (Peacock) with audio description, No Man’s Land: S1E4 (Hulu) with audio description, Grimmsburg: S1E9 (Netflix) with audio description, SNL: Quinta Brunson (Peacock) with audio description, Bosch: Legacy: S3E4 (Amazon) with audio description

Best Episode: SNL- I actually really liked this episode. it seemed as though the sketches all worked, Brunson was game for anything and everything, and the writers really seemed to know how to use her. Some clever cameos too, and a great cold open.

runner Up: the Walking Dead: Dead City- lots of people unexpectedly bit the dust in the middle of the season. it desperately needs audio description, but it was an exciting episode. At least one death i was rooting for.

Worth Mentioning: And Just Like That, Jurassic World: Chaos Theory, Bosch Legacy- The shows are all really pretty close together. i am a fan of And just Like That, though I miss Sara Ramirez, and i hate Aiden. Chaos Theory is always fun and a top show for me. Bosch Legacy had a fun way to close one door, while opening another, so to speak.

Best Audio Description: SNL- this week was on point. The narrator even stopped herself from chuckling at Colin Jost wearing some kind of Queen’s crown on his head in a likely photoshopped image. The description on Brunson’s outfit for her monologue was delightful, nothing about embracing her femininity or anything, and the musical guest also had solid description. This was a great episode all around.

runner Up: Jurassic World: Chaos Theory- Kenji’s gang went after a raptor in an exciting sequence that was well described, while Brooklyn tried to advance her espionage with the Handler that had some nice beats.

Worth Mentioning: Bosch legacy, No Man’s land, And Just Like That- Basically the top 5, but Dead city didn’t have audio description, so the uncomfortable No Man’s Land steals a top 5 spot here for a very unnerving sequence. Or a few.

Best Performance: Quinta Brunson- There have been a few great hosts, who they just can’t write for. Brunson managed to get a variety of sketches that worked, unlike Jack Black, who got basically the same sketch as if he is a one note comedian.

runner Up: Kenan Thompson (SNL)- One of the few standout players really benefitted from Brunson’s presence, and instead of doing the heavy lifting himself, got to play off someone instead. there is a difference.

Worth Mentioning: Denise Goff (The Stolen Girl), Titus Welliver (Bosch Legacy), and and definitely someone in No Man’s Land- I like how Welliver handled himself on the stand, and navigated this new case at the same time, and the final episode of The Stolen Girl gave Goff a lot to do, but really No Man’s Land is so bleak, not all is in English, someone would have to be recognized after that episode.

I just don’t know who, as it feels like a group effort to bring that level of bleakness.

Best Moment Of Audio description: infidel (No Man’s Land)- That scene was a lot. Not only did it require audio description, but also the language was being done by Dave Wallace for all those shouts and chants, and considering the brutality and depravity of the scene, I thought they really tried their best to thread this needle.

runner Up: The outfits (SNL)- I did really love the description of the outfits of the musical guest, and Brunson.

Runner Up 2- The Handler Has A Heart (Jurassic World: Chaos Theory)- I did enjoy the little bit about the raptors nuzzling her hand.

Runner Up 3: Charlotte’s daughter is thirsty (And Just Like That)- I liked the sequence at the ballet, but I loved how we kept checking in on this girl leaning forward in her seat gawking at her ballet crush.

Runner Up 4: The Lip Sync (Drag Race)- I still am figuring out the new group of Queens, and who my favorite is, but the lip syncs here are always given the most life possible.

Worst Of…- two out of ten shows didn’t have audio description. What’s worse, is that Dead city season 1 had audio description later on Netflix, indicating a track might have existed without being used, and The Stolen Girl is an import, which had audio description, which never made it to Disney Plus in the US. Likely I watched two shows that already have audio description, but I didn’t get to use it, because of sheer apathy.

Say Something!
