TV Shows Watched: Black Mirror: S2E3 (Netflix) with audio description, Stick: S1E2 (Apple Plus) with audio description, FUBAR: S2E1 (Netflix) with audio description, Overcompensating: S1E6 (Amazon) with audio description, battle Camp: S1E10 (Netflix) with audio description, The Rehearsal: S2E3 (MAX) with audio description, and Yellowstone: S5E10 (Peacock) with audio description
Best Episode: Overcompensating- Now that benny and carmen are in a different place, the show takes on a fun new dynamic. I have lots of thoughts on Peter’s character, and I wonder about his last awful decision at the end of the episode.
Runner Up: The Rehearsal- What a hilariously absurd episode. Sometimes, he takes something serious and leans into it, but here, he takes a section of Sully’s book, and decides to immerse himself in growing up as Sully, and even becoming a baby again.
Best Audio Description: Black Mirror- while I do find :down and outs” to be an odd choice, I’m also not British. I thought it felt old timey, like referring to something as a Hooverville, but for an episode where an animated bear is the focus, I thought the description was strong otherwise.
Runner Up: Overcompensating- We’re starting to put benny into some really funny situations that are getting some good description. Like, what he picked up out of the trash, and I think…almost did with it? EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEW.
Best Performance: Nathan Fielder (The Rehearsal)- The baby stuff was silly, but when he got to the section in Sully’s book about being aroused mid-flight and having to control that, it was hilarious to hear him deadpan essentially masturbating while “flying a plane”. It’s a simulation, but still. His delivery worked.
Runner Up: Kelly Reilly (Yellowstone)- Not really. but kinda. I used to believe she deserved an Emmy nomination earlier in the run of the series, but her work in the back half of Season 5 can best be described as ‘fuck it”. She has this unintentionally hilarious scene with Wes Bentley as her evil brother where she keeps telling him to look at her, and he can’t, so she slaps him. then, before she leaves, she basically body slams this other side chick, before stumbling out. I’m sure there was a better performance, but not one that felt so campy. Reilly has gone from being awards worthy to doing it for the money, and it clearly had to do with being required to finish a show when Kevin Costner couldn’t be required to do so. Even funnier, is knowing she’s getting a spinoff with cole Hauser, and wondering if she’ll take that seriously again, or if Beth will continue to be a parody of what she once was.
Best Moment Of Audio description: Put That Back In The Trash (Overcompensating)- Benny… don’t do it. Put it down. wash your hands. I know we shouldn’t kink shame, but I’m drawing the line. Especially considering how that scene finishes, and that it may not even have been what he wanted.
runner Up: The wheel (Battle camp)- I do like how the description supports the drama of watching the wheel spin, and with it being the last episode of Battle Camp, I wanted to throw it one final bone.
Worst Of…- I didn’t really dislike anything. Even the shows I didn’t mention in any category (Stick, FUBAR), I enjoyed. I do wish FUBAR had shorter episodes, as it leans more comedy, and sometimes feels like it is stretching. the person who won Battle Camp wasn’t the one i was rooting for, but I also wasn’t as deeply committed as I have been in other shows. Everything had audio description. Nothing failed me. No weird forced sign outs. No one used TTS audio description. there is no worst of the day. Even the acting in Yellowstone was unintentionally hilarious. it feels like they’re giving up and just trying to give fans closure, but that no one wants to be there.
