The Small Screen Diaries- 06/14/25

TV Shows Watched: tires: S2E2 (Netflix) with audio description, The great North: S5e14 (Hulu) no audio description, Love Death And Robots: S4E5 (Netflix) with audio description, Murderbot: S1E6 (Apple Plus) with audio description, Jurassic World: Chaos Theory: S3E10 (Netflix) with audio description, Adults: S1E2 (Hulu) with audio description, King Of The Hill: S1E5 (Hulu) no audio description, Grimmsburg: S1E11 (Netflix) with audio description, Pop culture Jeopardy: S1E20 (Amazon) with audio description, Hacks: S4E8 (MAX) with audio description, and Sherlock and daughter: S1E1 (MAX) No Audio Description!

New Show Alert! I started watching Sherlock and Daughter, which I was surprised to see on MAX because it is also currently a CW show. They don’t carry all current CW programming, so i wonder how this got there. It did get here without audio description, so there’s that. It is Ok. Sherlock is really brazen here, more than usual, and there was at least one actor who I questioned how they ever got cast. I also resumed where I was on King Of The Hill, which I started watching last year because it is currently being revived at Hulu. I’m not sure of the premiere date, but it is the same reason I’m catching up on Futurama.

Best Episode: Hacks- Not surprisingly, hacks was back in true form as Deborah used her relationship with the Mayor of Vegas to land an exclusive, and figured out how to do the nightly show thing different and increase her ratings. Ava meanwhile had her mom in town, and Kayla is mulling an offer from her father she could definitely refuse.

Runner Up: Love Death and Robots- i loved this cat episode. The cats teaming up with the robots? Hilarious. My favorite episode of the new season.

Best of The Rest: Murderbot, Jurassic World Chaos Theory, and Adults- Props to Chaos Theory for having an entire character swallowed by a big dinosaur. It was an unintentionally hilarious moment, as I was surprised they did it, but also played with that whole thing Owen did in the Jurassic World movies by holding his hand out like he was controlling dinosaurs using the force.

Best Audio Description: Love death and Robots- this show has pretty consistently strong audio description, and this quirky episode kept up the pace.

Runner Up: Jurassic World: Chaos Theory- With so many animated shows in one day, it shouldn’t be too surprising that the top two spots ended up animated.

Best Of The Rest: tires, Hacks, Adults- Hacks had some moments that stood out. It is a series that overall is very mixed for me in terms of AD, but this episode had some nice beats, and seemed to hit everywhere it needed. Tires actually does a lot for a show with little breaks as well, and Adutls is coming along enough that I’d rather put it in the Top 5 than Murderbot.

Best Performance: Jean Smart (Hacks)- She didn’t really have a lot of competition, but her Deborah Vance continues to be legendary.

runner Up: Hannah Einbinder (Hacks)- it just wasn’t a day for dynamic performances, with most shows being half hour comedies, and a ton of animated shows. i don’t even feel bad about slotting these two in the top spots again.

Best Of The Rest: Alexander Skarsgard (Murderbot), Nick Offerman (The Great North), and Jon Hamm (Grimmsburg)- Skarsgard is a natural fit, but on a slow day full of animation, I figured why not single out the voice actors who anchor their shows the best. I’m a big fan of Offerman and Hamm, which is why I root for these shows to stay on air. Both are a good use of their talents.

Best Moment Of Audio description: The Cat Face (Love death and robots)- I loved how after we got the question about the lights, we saw the illuminated cat face. A cute sight gag.

Runner Up: The Handler (chaos theory)- Basically, everything having to do with her character. she’s a non-verbal character, and there was so much focus on her this episode. I thought it was all very well described.

Runner Up 3- Zamboni (Hacks)- I’m glad this sight gag made it to the description, and wasn’t lost in the shuffle.

Runner Up 3- Non Verbal Harassment (tires)- A pretty solid description in this moment. The room of men are asked to give examples of non verbal sexual harassment, and they do.

Runner Up 4- Good Use of Prosthetics (Chaos theory)- Brooklyn uses her arm in a creative way.

Worst Of- I feel like Sherlock and Daughter was the most egregious missing AD track. Otherwise, like the other adult animated shows that they haven’t gone back and audio described the entire run, it is just sad that King of The Hill and the Great North are lumped in.I’ll even extend a bit here, and says that MAX is the loser of the day, if audio description exists for Sherlock and Daughter and they just aren’t using it. like, they just dropped Cleaner this week as a new movie, but that movie had no audio description anywhere. They’re basically dumping the Daisy Ridley Die Hard knockoff on the world, and not really caring if anyone actually sees it.

Say Something!
