forever- Finished this show. Love it. i had some problems early on with the development of Justin’s mother being weak, but she’s fleshed out in the back half of the series. I just think the comparisons are drawn since Keisha comes essentially from a single parent household, that the mother/child dynamic should have been stronger at the beginning. By the end, grab your tissues, cause Judy Blume is here for a dose of reality. wood Harris was a standout as his character is usually pretty easy going, and had to listen to Justin talk about college in a deflating way for a father who never went, and was looking forward to having a first generation college grad in the family. I strongly recommend this entire series. the audio description is strong, often capturing specific style choices, and meeting the teen demo where they are with language they would use. You might not like it if you don’t like watching teens have sex, but then again, this isn’t the first TV show or movie to depict that. This just does it with a tad bit of emotional intelligence.

You- this show has solid audio description, but i totally dislike where we are headed, which would be too spoilery to go into detail. So, while the show seems destined to finish on a note it hasn’t earned, if you are here for audio description, this is a pretty consistent standout.

the Buccaneers- it’s a fluffy period drama. It feels like watching a period drama version of Dawson’s Creek or Gilmore Girls at times. Maybe Gossip Girl too. but, if you can get past the fact the entire cast of girls feel shockingly modern for this, it has some charm, and a really delightful and perfectly fine audio description track so far.

Motorheads- Another sow that feels like a teen drama. this show continues to build out its ensemble, and it would be a shame if amazon stopped its run after one season. the audio description is good, but I’m not sure it does more than getting you through the story. I’ve never really been able to gush over it, because it hasn’t given me a reason to.

peaky Blinders- Another show on my bucket list I’m trying to watch for the first time. This was alright, though already way better than Mobland, which seems like it really wanted to be this. there’s a lot of setup in the first episode. I didn’t gush because while I liked the audio description for the pilot, when I didn’t hit stop, it started playing the next episode, which appears to be a totally different narrator. I’m intrigued, but also approaching with much trepidation going forward.

king of the Hill- not much to discuss. there’s a revival coming. hank was constipated.

No Man’s Land- This series is so dark and depressing, I’m not sure I even want to watch season 2, but I at least want to hear how they changed up the audio description from having Dave Wallace read every character. He’s amazing, but that is a tall order. A very interesting and timely show considering our world political climate.

Last week tonight- John Oliver went after a lot of things in this episode, as usual, but his big thing was detention centers for minors, and systematic abuse. It was pretty eye opening, and while some kids certainly deserve to be detained, he also points out many cases where kids were sent away for absurd things, and how kids are in these facilities that are terrible when just awaiting trial. we need to do better.

Poker Face- My winner for Best Performance was this little girl who is in the running for “person most likely to be the spawn of Satan”. Charlie ends up working at an elementary school as a lunch lady, and while no kids died (thankfully), she’s embroiled in this classroom drama over a magic trick gone wrong, and this spoiled brat who is outsmarting all the adults. she’s like 8, and she has blackmail on everyone. she’s terrifying, and I think this is my new favorite episode of Poker Face. The ending was perfection. The audio description, also, excellent.

Worst of…- I’m not surprised at the lack of audio description i had, but I did watch two shows without audio description. Otherwise, I generally liked everything I watched. no losers today. I suppose, Hulu, but I wouldn’t expect King Of The Hill to get audio description until the reboot materializes. So, I consider the lack of audio description on the older seasons of Futurama their responsibility, but right now, someone somewhere should be working on audio description for this, in preparation for the revival. So, destined to likely be a loser, but I’ll remain optimistic and say… none today. For now.

  1. The AD for all but season 5 of Peaky Blinders was acquired from the BBC, where the show was first broadcast. The AD vendor the BBC uses for all of its content is Red Bee Media, who has quite a few differences in their approach across all the steps in the AD production process, one of which is that they don’t aim to have episodes narrated by the same person. I wonder if you’ll notice any other differences as you watch the show.
