I would love to say that as an individual critic, I also know every project in development, and am fully aware of all upcoming releases on all platforms. That would be a lie. A few days before its scheduled release, I got spam from Netflix letting me know something called “K-Pop Demon Hunters” was coming on Friday, and that was all I needed. Sometimes, a title is just so weird that you have to check it out. Vikings Vs dinosaurs? Sure. Alien Vs Annie? The sun isn’t coming out tomorrow. Vienna Boys Choir Detective Agency? I guess.
But this one is real. Sony Animation released this onto Netflix with a mix of original tunes and K-Pop classics (so I’m told), with a plot that is basically “one song to save the world”. We follow a girl group called Huntrex as they wow their fans and slay demons on the side. There’s a hell mouth type of thing they need to close, with a Satan stand-in. The main girl is also living a secret fear of being discovered as half-demon herself, and it is a profound shame she lives with and sings about. An enterprising demon pitches to Not Satan the idea of forming a boy band to fight the girl group, because why not, and he is skeptical, but is willing to do anything for a few more souls. So, the girls find themselves battling and singing against a boy band, just in time for a big competition for all the marbles… and the fate of the world.
there’s a lot left wanting in the script in terms of character development, but I had a lot of fun. i don’t even listen to K-Pop, and this film had my full attention. it knows it is cheesy, campy, sugary sweet fluff and it never tries to be anything more. it is very surface level, as is pop music. there’s a song in here called Soda Pop. we aren’t trying to adapt Kafka here, this is a film where popcorn flows from girls eyes’s when they get excited… and they eat it. the voice cast is probably K-Pop stars, and they sound great. The audio description, by international Digital Center, is well mixed, narrated, and written. The characters are decently described, to give some differences. The demon magic is highlighted and supported well, including the tattoo like lines the demons have on their skin.
critics will probably overthink this. But, we need fun and entertaining films that just are trying to achieve making you have a good time. this could be a sleeper fan favorite, and maybe even get some Annie nominations. Right now, not having seen Pixar’s latest just yet, this is my favorite animated entry of 2025.
