A handful of new shows joined the fray this week. Some of them are older shows, like Mindhunter (Netflix), which looks to be getting the same film revival treatment as Peaky Blinders, and others are new shows, like We Were Liars (Amazon), The Waterfront (Netflix), and Revival (peacock). So as a complimentary side list. To my daily diaries, here’s my ongoing rankings of every show on my watchlist from the past week, including shows I finished like forever (Netflix) and the NArrow road to The deep North (Amazon).
Winner: Hacks (MAX) with audio description- I have one episode left for next week, which seems fitting to throw Hacks against heavy hitters like The Bear, Squid Game, and Ironheart, all of which start up next week. But, for now, the drama between Deborah and Ava is the best damn thing I’m watching. Are some trophies in this shows future? As far as the audio description goes, I’m sporadically impressed, but most of the time, the audio description feels like it is falling short. I’m not sure it falls so short that it is a problem. the show is structured to have a lot of dialogue, which clogs the air and makes a lot of description difficult.
Runner Up: From (MGm Plus) with audio description- Halfway through season 2, and I like that this mystery keeps asking questions, and building lore, without answering anything. where are they? who knows. In many ways, From is the greatest mystery since Lost, because the answer hasn’t come, and the patience shown by the show runners pays off in spades. I do prefer the Season 1 audio description, however, season 2 still takes advantage of the graphic violence.
#3- Black Mirror (Netflix) with audio description- while the last episode, White Christmas, certainly leaves with a lot of questions, it is the kind of episode that stays with you, is brilliant, and really the whole reason something like Black Mirror works. It also allowed for some of the stronger audio description for the series, as we had to deal with the “blocking” in the episode.
#4- Poker Face (Peacock) with audio description- That episode with the evil little girl was my favorite of the series, so no surprise that this keeps moving up the list. A clever show, critically adored, and featuring strong audio description. I’m hoping Peacock doesn’t let this go anytime soon.
#5- The Pitt (MAX) with audio description- this show was one I originally removed from my list because I thought it was just another typical medical drama. then around episode 6 it really starts taking off, and by episode 8, I needed tissues. This sneaks up on you. Good luck to Emmy voters for picking any person out of the ensemble other than Noah Wyle. this is one of the best reasons to have an ensemble award at the Emmy’s. However, I wouldn’t say the audio description is consistently great, but rather,… it has moments.
#6- mindhunter (Netflix) with audio description- one episode in, and David Fincher’s profiler drama is just that good. I always heard good things, but damn. I felt like i was watching a David Fincher movie. I’m not sure how I feel about the description just yet. I’m waiting to hear more of it when I tackle the next episode.
#7- Last Week tonight (MAX) no audio description- Always the highest ranked show without audio description. i also think it has always been in the top 10, somewhere.
#8- Bet (Netflix) with audio description- I’m obsessed. I know Netflix won’t renew this, but if I was in charge of programming, et would have gotten a renewal just for me. Just so I could see where this goes. Even if I had to tell them Season 2 would be its last, it would at least give the show an official ending. I generally do love the audio description, but the hunt episode wasn’t the stellar standout it should have been, either from the show’s perspective, or the description.
#9- Overcompensating (Amazon) with audio description- I had to slide this into the top 10 after that terrific Welcome To The Black Parade episode. the whole cast nailed going home for the holidays, and Benny reconciled with a moment from his past. I like this description. It isn’t the best on TV right now, but it is certainly a good track.
#10- Breaking Bad (Netflix) with audio description- I’m 3 episodes into my run of this. I’ve always meant to watch this. It is weird that I saw all of better Call Saul but none of this. the audio description is excellent, and I love having the consistency of Diane Newman on both shows.
#11- Murderbot (Apple Plus) with audio description- It’s just a fun science fiction series that doesn’t have long episodes. I don’t like the audio description, but a fan actually wrote me a detailed breakdown of some of the things I was missing, including a description of Murderbot. It was super helpful to have that context.
#12- Stick (Apple Plus) with audio description- Owen Wilson’s golf comedy has a surprise in their back pocket in Marc Maron, who was terrific in Glow, but has also done solid dramatic work in films like To Leslie. This show has some decent audio description to it.
#13- Forever (Netflix) with audio description- Finished. This is an excellent show, with a solid ending for the series. totally what I expected. I commented a lot on the audio description being good, and the specificity of the hairstyles, and using language that kids use in the description, all made sense. It met the audience where they were, and it works.
#14- Duster (MAX) with audio description- once in the bottom 30, like The Pitt, it has proven my initial instincts wrong, and delivered a smart caper with action every week. Sleek and stylish, this does have some really nice audio description, mostly during chase sequences or gunfights.
#15- the Daily Show (Paramount Plus) no audio description- I technically only watched one episode, but I caught half of another on Youtube. They had a great week.
#16- Silicon Valley (MAX) with audio description- A clever ensemble comedy. I had started to watch this last summer, and I’m just getting back into it. Dave Wallace’s audio description matches the tone of the show.
#17- Nine Perfect Strangers (Hulu) with audio description- this new season has been surprisingly strong, and then episode five happened. After an emotionally void episode, I didn’t let it fall, because when we start getting back to the other characters, I feel a return to form is soon.
#18- Pop Culture Jeopardy (Amazon) with audio description- I’m in the 20’s in terms of episodes. I just do one a week, and have fun with that.
#19- The Rehersal (MAX) with audio description- is Nathan Fielder about to bring his comedy to congress? I’m excited for the next episode on my docket.
#20- The Better Sister (Amazon) with audio description- It has been ranked higher, but has been slipping. I feel like the mystery showed too much up front, and now I’m in a boring holding pattern. I already worry the show is predictable. the description is fine though.
21- The Walking Dead: Dead City (AMC Plus) no audio description- Finished. I’m a fan of the series, and while I’ve let some current event shows creep into the top 20, I feel like keeping this one just out of reach makes sense. The finale didn’t surprise me. I could have predicted who wasn’t returning for Season 3.
#22- Euphoria (MAX) with audio description- I actually liked the second episode more. the kids still aren’t alright, but it felt more focused. So far, I don’t have a problem with the audio description. the show is frank, so is the audio description.
#23- Adults (Hulu) with audio description- It reminds me of so many attempts to do this friend group thing, and some work out, some don’t. I wonder if anyone else is watching Adults. It did drop during a busy time.
#24- And Just Like That (MAX) with audio description- Country Carrie was a fun episode, and in spite of the presence of Aiden, he did force Carrie out of her comfort zone, and the show just felt fresher. i do like the audio description track.
#25- Secrets We Keep (Netflix) with audio description- Finished. A huge jump from last week. That finale had a killer mic drop reveal. i also think this is really a best case scenario mold for TTS International shows or movies. The voice is one of the better and more human sounding voices.
#26- Top Chef (Peacock) with audio description- Gave it a nice little bump after my second favorite contestant this season took the prize. Also, this is done, so a big thanks to everyone who put audio description on a show in its 22nd season.
#27- You (Netflix) with audio description- I am close to finishing, and the direction the show is headed in really needs to prove me wrong, because I feel like I’m headed for a finale I’ll hate. This show could be ranked much lower next week.
#28- Scrubs (Peacock) no audio description- Sadly, I couldn’t find audio description for this, but Zach Braff just signed on to the revival, so this is happening, and I have a lot of catching up to do. I did watch this off and on, but never all the episodes start to finish.
#29- Drag Race All Stars (Paramount Plus) with audio description- Onto the third group! Who will be my favorite here? I’ve got three episodes to figure it out.
#30- Motorheads (Amazon) with audio description- This teen drama has slid into the Top 30. Not much to say here, except it is pretty standard. I’ve said if you always wanted The CW to make a Fast and furious show, this would be it.
#31- The Buccaneers (Apple Plus) with audio description- I’m not to the new season yet, but it charms me more now on the rewatch. I also like the audio description. Again, a very CW type show.
#32- the Waterfront (Netflix) with audio description- Kevin Williamson created Dawson’s Creek, so I was hoping for more of that. I got a bit of a darker version of Outer Banks. I like this after two episodes, and it has room to grow.
#33- We Were Liars (Amazon) with audio description- An adaptation with a young cast. It feels like a darker version of The Summer I Turned pretty or Ginny and Georgia. The narrator is the wrong choice. I’ve made comments in the past about flatness or sounding AI adjacent, but she’s just too happy for this show. There’s a pretty sad moment at the end of the second episode that almost feels like a joke or something. it is so distracting. I’ve not liked AD before, but I rarely ever find it distracting to where it is affecting my ability to flat out enjoy the film or show. I stopped watching the Day of The Jackal, but that was because of the writing. I don’t know when a narrator choice has put a show in jeopardy before. I’ll be optimistic for now.
#34- Revival (Peacock) with audio description- Cool premise, but it has been done before. the audio description misses a lot of visual elements the characters seem to be reacting to, which leaves us behind.
#35- The Survivors (Netflix) with audio description- It will all come down to the finale. Is the ending worth the journey?
#36- Bosch Legacy (Amazon) with audio description- A reliable crime drama with solid audio description. What more can you ask for?
#37- The Great North (Hulu) no audio description- Adult animation comfort food. Even without the description. If it had it, it would probably be higher.
#38- Futurama (Hulu) I think I need to get to Season 8 to get to audio description? that’s the rumor. I’m currently on five.
#39- Yellowstone (Peacock) with audio description- I think I have this ranked too high. I’m a fan, and i think I’m still trying to reconcile with how shitty the last few episodes are.
#40- Ginny and Georgia (Netflix) with audio description- Close to finishing Season 1 (again). I don’t dislike this show, but it could be better. It is fine, and so is the audio description. rumor is it already is picked up for Season 4.
#41- Department Q (Netflix) with audio description- I’m just not feeling this as much as other people. At this rate, I’ll probably rewatch this before Season 2, and have a different opinion.
#42- SNL (Peacock) with audio description- Last episode watched was Walton Goggins. The show has some pretty great audio description.
#43- Peaky Blinders (Netflix) with audio description- Already so much higher than Mobland. that should be worth a lot. it is also teaching me about how the Brits do audio description.
#44- Lomg pf the Hill (Hulu) no audio description- Another catch up.
#45- Tires (Netflix) with audio description- the Shane Gilles comedy is edgy, but sometimes in the wrong direction. It is easy to take, and part of me appreciates that he still goes for bawdy humor.
#46- Yes Chef (Peacock) with audio description- it isn’t Top Chef, but it is a solid placeholder. They brought back two people and already cut them both again. ha.
#47- Fubar (Netflix) with audio description- Arnold needs better writing and a better ensemble. I’m watching for him, but this is not a quality show.
#48- No Man’s Land (Hulu) with audio description- one of two depressing shows on my list. this one still has a second season for me to survive.
#49- Love Death and robots (Netflix) with audio description- little shorts with excellent audio description.
#50- Berlin ER (Apple Plus) with audio description- Finished. And I’m glad I did.
#51- Destination X (Peacock) with audio description- Very mediocre, but does have Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
#52- America’s Got Talent (Peacock) with audio description- One of the best audio described shows on the list, I’m just not a fan of this show.
#53- Grimmsburg (Netflix) with audio description- Still catching up.
#54- Kings of Johburg (Netflix) with audio description- the pilot was OK, but I feel like I was promised more supernatural elements. this is a wait and see.
#55- the Narrow Road to the Deep North (Amazon) with audio description- profound, deeply disturbing, and depressing. The audio description isn’t recorded at the right quality.
#56- F1: the Academy (Netflix) with audio description- it isn’t my thing, and this could fall off the list. I can see myself not watching anymore.
#57- Sherlock and daughter (MAX) no audio description- Has some promise, but needs AD.
#58- Lazarus (MAX) with audio description- Apparently more than 10 episodes…
#59- Dark Winds (Netflix) no audio description- the struggle is so real here without audio description.
#60- The Kardashians (Hulu) with audio description- the perfect hate watch.
#61- Next Gen NYC (Peacock) with audio description- much like F1, it has a chance of falling off the list.
