Mindhunter- Loving this. Cameron Britton as the first serial killer they talk to is chilling. He’s so laid back, matter of fact, and feels like the kind of guy you could get a beer with, but then you actually hear what he’s saying, and what he’s done, and it is so disturbing. it makes it even more unnerving how calm and friendly he is, disarmingly so. I think about the choice of narrator here, and unlike what I complained about yesterday, Mindhunter just has a bit more of a flat narration with nothing to it. well written, but the narrator doesn’t elevate it, but also doesn’t take away. It is kind of dull, but functional.
The walking Dead: dead City- Finished season 2. No Audio Description. I apparently need to take all the discontinued pennies and dump them in a wishing well so AMC Plus is magically accessible before next season.
from- Love this show. So many great moments. I picked Kenny’s mother as the runner-up, because her interaction with Sarah was just so different. You could tell she was battling this idea of a woman not raising her voice, or showing emotion, as some byproduct of cultural considerations, but she also couldn’t stand to be in Sarah’s presence, and needed her to know that. it was measured, and restrained. I feel like Victor came really close to telling Jay something really important.
Scrubs- Like with many shows I’m trying to use the summer to catch up on (King Of The hill, Peaky Blinders, mindhunter), there is a future for the franchise. Zach Braff signed to do the revival, so that’s coming sometime in the next year I believe. It isn’t available anywhere currently with audio description, so peacock it is. Don’t look at me like that. I’m no Superman.
Drag Race All Stars- Oh, Ginger is back this season. I guess I have someone to root for. With all the times Ginger has been on Drag Race or an offshoot, it is amazing she hasn’t won. She’s one of the more successful alumni of the series, so maybe everyone else is just here to have a coronation for Minj to finally wear the crown? i kind of wanted them to do The Traitors.
Yes chef- After bringing back two, those two are now gone. That was entirely pointless. I’m not always going to have profound thoughts about these reality shows.
Lazarus- It is still going. I’m so used to short seasons now, that this going into episode 11, and then 12, feels like a thing of the past. Really only Network shows get big episode counts now. the thing about this audio description is that even though it is recorded at poor quality, at some point, my brain has just learned to normalize it so I’m not angry at this show for the hole season. Like, it bothered me more at the begining than now, but nothing actually changed.
Peaky Blinders- A lesson in how Brits do audio description. I’m fine with different styles and approaches, and I’m used to UK/Australian descriptions changing the mix of what I’m listening to. I even got South African description with Kings of Johburg. But, there’s nothing that will convince me that either a company should be complacent in not being credited, or that a film/television distributor should force a company to be not credited for the track. We should get to hear who is responsible, bare minimum, the company. it allows for accountability, especially for shows that get multiple tracks made. I could be slamming some film or series and two different companies may have done the work for it, without knowing what I listened to, or without me even having access to that information. Everything else is debatable style and quality choices, but without credits, I’m debating the wind.
The Kardashians- We could do better about who is talking. We really could. these girls sound so much alike, that it is so hard to tell sometimes.
Breaking Bad- Love this track. I like how the little details got pulled out. I almost picked the scene where Jesse was tripping, and thought the Mormons had come to kill him. Also, I can swap any of these actors in at any point for performance, but I’m trying to change it up as much as I can.
Poker Face- I think they followed up my favorite episode with my least. I’m sorry, but everything about this episode was cheesy and dumb. the audio description was great, handling the action scenes, but more specifically pointing out every time Heat was playing in the background. I love that an R rated crime drama is just playing openly on the TV’s in a big box store. Because of course it is. the episode pays homage to Heat, which is so oddly specific, but whatever. The AD team did a nice job, and just plainly acknowledged that what was on TV was Heat, and the actors you could see were Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro. now, it’s time to watch Heat with audio description. Oh wait…
