The Small Screen Diaries- The Weekly Rankings

I’m going to start trying to not have more than 60 active shows. Honestly, that is a lot of TV shows on an active watchlist. Not always does every show have new episodes. Joining this week are several heavy hitters including Iron Heart (Disney Plus), Squid Game (Netflix), The Bear (Hulu), Smoke (Apple Plus), and Countdown (Amazon). A few shows reached the end of their seasons as denoted below.

WINNER: Hacks (MAX)- Finishing on top. I can’t wait to see where they take this show next season, and I’m really pulling for an Emmy win for Hannah Einbinder in Supporting Actress. Ava matters just as much.

Runner Up: From (MGM Plus) with audio description- For now, this looks to be headed for the top spot next week. I’m in the middle part of Season 2, still working on a catch up, but this show is very much my thing. Great performances. if MGM Plus wasn’t so on the fringe of television, I would think this had some Emmy chances.

#3- Squid Game (Netflix) with audio description- it took less than a day for a cameo to be spoiled for me. So,I won’t do that to you. I am only one episode into the final season, and I’m trying to remember who everyone is. Right now, my problem is that only one survives or wins. there’s more than one that I want to see win, and it isn’t even our returning Guillen. Who is your favorite to win?

#4- Black Mirror (Netflix) with audio description- I can’t believe I waited this long to jump in. Now I’m up to Season 3, and while the best episodes fall short, they fall because I want more. That’s a good problem to have. If they can keep creating these little mini worlds that could work as longer form series, that’s just like putting out a bunch of proof of concepts on larger works.

#5- the Pitt (MAX) with audio description- I’ve really come back around on this. The show gets better and better, and more emotionally invested. I can’t imagine picking one of the supporting cast members out. It’s an embarrassment of riches.

#6- The Bear (Hulu) with audio description- The third episode was a bit indulgent, but they stuck the landing. The first two were perfectly paced, and described. The third was dragging, until we got to that amazing final conversation.

#7- Poker Face (Peacock) with audio description- the last episode featuring John Cho as a con artist was delicious because it gave Charlie a challenge. She had revealed her power, and as the events unfurled, she had to figure out how to get ahead of his con artist character.

#8- Mindhunter (Netflix) with audio description- David Fincher’s thriller is just so good. I’m glad I’m catching up on this. I’m just barely into the series, but it only has two seasons. They are working on a movie, reportedly.

#9- Last week Tonight (MAX) no audio description- pretty much always going to be the highest rated show without audio description.

#10- Bet (Netflix) with audio description- I am obsessed. I’m obsessed and the show only has 2 episodes left. I’m resigned to the fact there’s no way Netflix picks this up. It will be a one and done, just like so many other great Netflix shows. Teenage Bounty hunters?

#11- Overcompensating (Amazon) with audio description- truly, the fact that this isn’t top 10 just indicates an embarrassment of riches. this show didn’t charm me right away, but it kept growing on me. Now, I’m hoping they find a way to keep these characters around for a second season. And the audio description last time around was really strong.

#12- Breaking Bad (Netflix) with audio description- Again, with the embarrassment of riches. even though I’m only 5 episodes into season 1, this feels like it should be a top 10 show. Maybe soon it will be, since it has a long way until I finish it.

#13- Smoke (Apple Plus) with audio description- I loved this pilot episode.I’ve only seen the first, but it was so well structured.I’m sure this is a one and done, as I can’t see taron Egerton doing anything more than a limited series at this stage in his career, but I’m hooked.

#14- Iron Heart (Disney Plus) with audio description- There is a Marvel curve, and with half the episodes out of the way, it doesn’t have the same potential to fall like daredevil did. I like RiRi, the show isn’t perfect, but it has a lot to like in her personal backstory and close friends and family. I wish we spent more time with that, and I wish Alden Eherenreich was in something else. i refuse to learn how to spell his name correctly.

Murderbot (Apple Plus) with audio description- Again, this was a top 10 show, but an embarrassment of riches just slid this down. this is reflective less of Murderbot doing anything wrong, but more of the strength of the other shows in my lineup. it should be close to wrapping up in an episode or two. I wonder if it wil end with a path to a second season.

#16- Stick (Apple plus) with audio description- Another show that has slid out of no real fault. it has remained consistent, but new shows came in, and a few keep getting better.

#17- the Daily Show (Paramount Plus) no audio description- They took the week off. Fine.

#18- Pop Culture Jeopardy (Amazon) with audio description- Technically a 2024 show, but at one episode a week (basically), I’m 22 episodes in and this thing is still getting ranked.

#19- Duster (MAX) with audio description- I feel like the show is starting to overreach a bit as it closes in on the season finale. last episode felt like it was crammed, and things had to happen even if they didn’t entirely make sense. It feels just slightly off, like JJ Abrams planned for a 10 episode season, but MAX only gave him 8.

#20- Adults (Hulu) with audio description- this oddball gang of Gen Z-ers is catching on me. It isn’t quite to the level of Happy endings or Friends, but it shows promise.

#21- Silicon Valley (MAX) with audio description- Still catching up, and this is pretty steady week-to-week.

#22- Scrubs (Peacock) no audio description- one of the many upcoming revivals. Just trying to catch up in time. The ADP didn’t have it listed anywhere with audio description, so i just chose Peacock, because I think the revival is either NBC or Peacock.

#23- Nine Perfect Strangers (Hulu) with audio description- The ensemble has some memorable performers, from Murray Bartlett and Christine Baranski to Dolly Deleon and Henry Goulding.

#24- The Rehearsal (MAX) with audio description- Admittedly, I did want Nathan to testify in front of a real congress. I think I’m down to the last episode, if Season 2 has the same amount of episodes as season 1.

#25- The Better Sister (Amazon) with audio description- Strong performances lift up a very mediocre mystery with apparently very little interest in being too twisty.

#26- Euphoria (MAX) with audio description- Considering I’ve made it three episodes in on a second watch, and I have it this high, is a win. I’ve made it further on the rewatch. First time, i didn’t make it past the pilot.

#27- And Just Like That (MAX) with audio description- We are so close to sending Aiden on a farewell tour. Not only does Carrie have a nice young hot gardener, but her neighbor is single and British. Also, kudos to a certain someone for baring it all.

#28- the Waterfront (Netflix) with audio description- this has actually risen since last week. It is getting better, and more interesting as we move forward. I’m a bit surprised, but I’m starting to like this family, and show runner Kevin Williamson always feeling the need to end on a huge cliffhanger.

#29- You (Netflix) with audio description- Done. Not entirely the finale I wanted, or thought fans deserved, but it did course correct from a worse ending. I’m just glad they realized Joe and Dexter aren’t the same, and one of them needed a reckoning.

#30- Drag Race All Stars (Paramount Plus) with audio description- I’m an episode behind everyone, so I’m still rooting for Ginger Minj. the audio description really does try to do as much as it can.

#31- Motorheads (Amazon) with audio description- Comfort food for those who miss the old CW shows. Two episodes left for me. I think Zack is gonna lose that car. Just a prediction.

#32- the buccaneers (Apple Plus) with audio description- james is a douche, but the rest of the cast is fun. this also has CW vibes, like when they tried a period drama with Reign.

#33- We Were Liars (Amazon) with audio description- A little stagnant. I didn’t move it up or down from last week. Yes, I would have chosen a different narrator. seeing other people have that issue at least makes me feel not too far out on a limb.

#34- the Great North (Hulu) no audio description- I have a few adult animated shows on here with no audio description. this is my favorite.

#35- Futurama (Hulu) no audio description yet- Still in Season 5 trying to catch up to the new episodes.

#36- revival (Peacock) audio description?- So, here’s a warning shot for Revival. I did knock it down a bit. Episode 2 doesn’t have audio description. I have no intention on watching it without. It really is a show that needs it, even the pretty crappy audio description it already had. So, it will continue to fall down this list as i wait for audio description, until it falls off, and I quit it, or it gets audio description.

#37- Bosch legacy (Amazon) with audio description- A reliable, steady performer, with reliable audio description.

#38- SNL (Peacock) with audio description- Done. Finally caught up.

#39- Patience (PBS) with audio description- Only one episode in, but this feels like a typical procedural.

#40- The Survivors (Netflix) with audio description- Done. I’m not blown away, but it was solid.

#41- Ginny and Georgia (Netflix) with audio description- The end to S1E8 made me laugh, and I just couldn’t pull this up into the Top 40. it was so poorly written.

#42- King Of The Hill (Hulu) no audio description- Just saw the revival is slated for August. I’m in Season 1. I’m not gonna make it unless I binge this really hard.

#43- Yellowstone (Peacock) with audio description- Episode 12 started to show me glimmers of what I used to like. Also, is Kevin Costner contractually obligated to be credited as top billed, even after his character has exited the show?

#44- Countdown (Amazon) with audio description- it is a bit of a cluster, with a lot of characters and a scattershot plot. not gonna lie, but after two episodes, I’m not entirely sure I know what the hell is going on.

#45- Department Q (Netflix) with audio description- I know people like this more than me, but it just feels like an average procedural to me. Maybe I’m missing something. Matthew Goode is nice in this, but he was better as Robert Evan’s.

#46- Peaky Blinders (Netflix) with audio description- I’m waiting for this to really take off. i see the mix, and the acting, but I want to be pulled in more.

#47- FUBAR (Netflix) with audio description- Arnold needs a better cast. I’ll continue to say this until it happens.

#48- tires (Netflix) with audio description- I need more of Thomas Haden Church as Shane’s dad. i think he might be what the show is missing.

#49- Yes chef (Peacock) with audio description- close to finishing. It isn’t Top Chef, but I’d watch a second season.

#50- Love death and Robots (Netflix) with audio description- Excellent AD and most of the shorts have been great this season.

#51- Grimmsburg (Netflix) with audio description- I’m now at a point, having finished what is available on Netflix, where I can either kick this off my list until Season 2 gets audio description maybe on Netflix, or continue on Hulu. I don’t have an answer yet.

#52- Destination X (Peacock) with audio description- It’s OK. I watch for the host, if I’m being honest.

#53- Sherlock and Daughter (MAX) no audio description- It is slowly growing on me, but how high can this go without audio description?

#54- Dark Winds (Netflix) no audio description yet- Almost to the audio described season.

#55- The Guilded Age (MAX) with audio description- Honestly, this can’t fall off my list, but I doubt it would ever move much higher. I watch with someone else, so I might as well talk about it.

#56- America’s Got talent (Peacock) with audio description- I do want to try and get to the live shows before quitting so I can see how they transfer audio description. this is one of the best audio described shows on my list though.

#57- Kings of Johburg (Netflix) with audio description- Can this South African crime drama hold onto a spot on the watch list? I don’t know.

#58- The KArdashians (Hulu) with audio description- As I continue to give out the final few spots, I’ll keep this gang around. They always hover at the bottom, but they stay safe.

#59- Lazarus (MAX) with audio description- I wonder if Episode 13 is the last, and if so, will this be an easy drop next week? maybe. But I’m not done, and i feel so close to the finish line. I can’t cut and run.

#60- No Man’s Land (Hulu) with audio description- So, the final spot, for one more week, because the whole reason I started watching was to see the difference between the audio description tracks and seasons, is this depressing but really good show. I don’t look forward to watching it, it does not spark joy, but i do need to see one more episode.

that means, failing to earn a spot in the Top 60, and getting axed are F1: The Academy (Netflix) and Next Gen NYC (Peacock). The latter has been on the bottom for every single of the three episodes I’ve seen.

Say Something!
