What Is it?: the third spinoff from Showtime’s hit series dexter find our intrepid serial killer alive, changing the ending to a previous entry, and off to New York City where he can look after Harrison, who might be dealing with his own dark passenger. While lurking in the shadows, he uncovers a secret meeting of serial killers, hosted by a rich benefactor. is it nice to be in like minded company, or is this offering Dexter the chance to do what he does best? Hot on his trail is Angel Batista, who after retiring, has figured out who the real bay harbor butcher was.
What Works: Talk about your guest stars. Not only does dexter talk to several ghosts of killers from the original series, but lining up heavy hitters like Dinklage, Thurman, Harris, Ritter, Stonestreet, and Dastmalchian gave Dexter Morgan a feast of formidable foes. Not only killers, but killer actors to share the screen with. I felt New blood squandered his revival, and the disappointing ending didn’t do anything to set up Harrison, or give any closure to fans. it is a solid rewrite and course correction from a far more competent team of writers who seem to have ideas about where this series can go next.
The whole season leads to a face off between Dexter and Angel, and unfortunate by product of the goodness in Angel. But, putting friend against friend, leads to moments with far more dramatic weight, since Dexter is otherwise learning and building relationships with everyone else, including his own son. Seeing David Zayas back for this certainly was a treat, and he has plenty of meaty material to slice into.
Also, the recast for Harrison was a nice touch, as jack Alcott feels far more comfortable in the Harrison crafted here than we got in New blood. A host of supporting cast members help shape the future of the spinoff, as Dexter evolves his friendship with a ride share driver, blessing, and rents a space from him. Blessing is the kind of character like Rita you hope never gets killed off, but assume the writers probably will use him at some point to crush your soul. I actually quit watching dexter after the Season 4 finale, and only returned to it recently to catch up. I look at that as a jump the shark moment they can’t take back, and it forever altered the show, mostly in a not great way. Resurrection seems to want to clean that slate, build a new ensemble, and after a powerhouse first season, who knows where it goes next?
I haven’t liked anything this much in this universe since John Lithgow’s excellent turn as trinity in season 4, and it took a host of A-list talent to come just short of that tremendous season. Peter Dinklage is an easy standout for Emmy voters. His Leon Prager really relishes in all things macabre, and while Dinklage normally ends up in roles specific to his height, his dwarfism is never brought up. He’s just the right person for the role. There’s nothing about him that required an actor like him in this role, but Leon is just the right role for Dinklage, who relishes every moment with glee. the other guest stars are entertaining, but Dinklage is the constant from his introduction until the end. he might just be the best foe for dexter since Trinity. or, perhaps, that is Angel? Is Dexter having to face off against a friend even more challenging?
I would certainly launch FYC campaigns for Hall, Dinklage, Zayas, and Thurman. Each one certainly has an episode to stand out in, and the case can absolutely be made. if you are a Dexter fan that strayed away, it is time to come home.
The Audio description: DVW made an excellent track. the show has both its bloody moments in kill rooms, as well as the discovery of dismembered bodies. But, it also has detectives trying to solve a crime, and following them on their path is just as important, and DVW understands details matter. they’ve handled this franchise previously, and been nominated for an Audio description People’s Choice award in the process. Very likely, this could see them in the running again.
Why You Might Like it: Dexter is back. I thought he was gone. As a fan of only the first four seasons of the original show, and a few fleeting moments or performances after, it is refreshing to watch an entire season worth defending.
Why You Might Not Like it: there are other living original cast members, and rather than fully incorporate them, beyond angel, they just briefly cameo. So, if you were expecting more screentime from the others, you’ll be disappointed. However, there are a lot of quick cameos.
Final thoughts: Back from the dead, a killer first season brings Dexter Morgan back to life. with a slew of fantastic recurring guest stars, the only question now is, can it keep up this pace?
fresh: Final Grade: 8.8/10
