*This Movie Does Have An Audio Description Track, Which Despite Multiple Attempts, I Was Unable To Secure An Accessible screener*
In many ways, this is a hopeful placeholder. I’m very much open to watching an accessible screener copy of this film, and I will be on the lookout for a copy when it comes to VOD later this month. However, because it is heading apparently straight to AMC Plus/Shudder, I’m not sure if there will be a copy available post-theatrical with a audio description since AMC Plus rarely uses the audio description created for IFC/Shudder theatrical titles.
The entire purpose of this film, like Steven Soderbergh’s Presence, is to enjoy the perspective. Without that ability, the movie is lost. the unique gag is that you are following as Indy, a real dog who is witnessing some scary things happen in the home he just moved to with his owner. Since the main character is a dog, there isn’t a ton of dialogue to explain a plot or story, and the whole reason for this film existing is lost. I don’t get Indy’s perspective without audio description. So why bother? Why am I even bothering to take up space? Because I want people to know that there’s a small window here to see this theatrically with audio description. if IFC couldn’t get me an accessible digital copy for a film releasing on digital in under a month, there may not be one. But theaters near me are listing it as having audio description.
In the blind community, we do sometimes deal with the tragic disappearing audio description. Or, the nearly non-existent audio description where it might be available on a digital copy in one of the stores but nowhere else (like King Of Kings). If, like me, the concept of watching a horror film from a dog’s perspective (an untrained dog at that), your only chance might be this weekend.
For right now, I’m hoping I’ll get to rewrite this in the near future, and my grade won’t stand forever. However, this is a fair review and a fair grade based on a system that ignored my request for accessibility. this film is simply not accessible without audio description, and I’m unsure enough of its digital future to take the time to encourage those interested to see it theatrically. just in case. It’s not fiar. I know. But, we constantly live at the behest of companies who do not understand the accessibility we need, and therefore have no bandwidth to even begin to consider what it is like every time they make a conscious or apathetic choice to keep us from having access.
