What Is it?: A shameless ripoff of Shop Around The corner, which has been remade several times. IMDb’s page doesn’t even acknowledge this is clearly based on source material previously written. Instead of bookstores, which really don’t exist in 2025, a neighborhood car garage faces competition from a big chain store, complete with the same storyline where the girl running the mom and pop store is corresponding in some manner with the guy opening the chain.
Why It Doesn’t Work: the girl from Riverdale and the guy from the last Bad Boys film are not the same as Tom hanks and meg Ryan. if you’re going to do this, then have some self respect, and don’t try and jump start careers. The original starred Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullivan. Even in the supporting cats, You’ve Got Mail had Greg Kinnear, Parker Posey, Dabney Coleman, Dave Chapelle, Steve Zahn, and jean Stapleton. This has a supporting cast of Bailee Madison, Katie O’Brien, and Jim gaffigan. It isn’t really the same thing.
I tend to watch films without knowing what I’m about to get myself into. Within a few minutes, I knew what this was.A few minutes later, I really did have that feeling that deja vu had taken over, but not in a good way. This felt like a studio asked an AI algorithm to update this concept, and somehow it has three credited screenwriters. I’m baffled as to how it took three humans time to write something that has been done to death. All you did was modernize it for 2025. dating apps, no book stores, electric vehicles, LGBTQ representation. that’s all these writers did.
Admittedly, I fast forwarded through some parts, because I like to keep my brain cells. For the studio that brought us the worst remake of War Of The Worlds, it feels very serendipitous that they also brought us the worst version of Shop Around The Corner.
Just don’t bother.
The Audio Description: From what I heard, the audio description transcended the film. then again, I was trying to get out of things as fast as possible. In theaters, people walk out. But, with streaming videos, we can fast forward and actually see how it ends. The sad thing is I didn’t get the full AD experience.
Why You Might Like it: You are so young that you don’t even know who tom Hanks and Meg Ryan are, and the concept of a bookstore eludes you. In that case, it’s past your bedtime.
Why You Might Not Like it: Because you’ve already seen it, and reducing the cast to young actors who aren’t even leading their generation are woefully inadequate to carry a hapless remake. Seriously, they didn’t go and get Zendaya, Timothee Chalamet, Jacob Elordi, Glen Powell, Michael B Jordan, or any of this new generation of stars.
Final Thoughts: Ultimately the title says it all. Maintenance was required, but not performed. Perhaps next time, if you’re going to check out the shop around the corner, just watch the classic this film has dumbed down for Gen Z.
Rotten: Final Grade: 4/10
