The Small Screen Diaries: 10/16/25

TV Shows Watched: DMV: S1E1 (Paramount Plus) with audio description, English Teacher: S2E4 (Disney Plus) with audio description, Ginny and Georgia: S3E7 (Netflix) with audio description, The Lowdown: S1E4 (Disney plus) with audio description, Shifting Gears: S2E4 (Disney plus) with audio description, and Starting Five: S2E1 (Netflix) with audio description

DMV- Not initially the funniest thing I’ve ever seen, but it certainly has promise, and a strong ensemble led by Tim meadows. The show is a time slot improvement over papa’s House, and the audio description is exactly the kind of narration we’ve come to expect from Media Access on comedies like ghosts. It is the same narrator. It doesn’t do the documentary style of shows like Abbott Elementary and The Office, but instead opts for more of a casual single cam like Ghosts. honestly, they should flip this with Georgie and Mandy, because it pairs much better with Ghosts.

English Teacher- They try to have a hot take conversation on being a DEI hire, but also, by the end they really came back around and had nothing to say, as our title gay latino realized that the world always saw him as that, even when he tried to pretend to be straight and white. So why not embrace it? the show typically has sharp writing, and I hope FX continues the show. Brian Jordan Alvarez had some off camera drama leak after the success of season 1, and it doesn’t necessarily bode well for the show.

Ginny and Georgia- Ginny has to fight to get some time alone with her mom after that surprise reveal at the end of episode six. Her decision is pretty solidified by her boyfriend’s reaction of “that’s wild”. Mama’s don’t let your babies to grow up to be as hats like Wolf. But, this episode will definitely make some people feel a certain way, and I thought it was handled beautifully. Georgia, normally high strung as all shit, reigned in all of her manic energy in the middle of her murder trial to actually try and give advice that wasn’t of her typical ilk, and let Ginny feel her decision. But, yeah, Ginny’s baby daddy hopping in a car and fleeing the scene was not a good look.

the lowdown- Fun fact.If you live in certain cities, you can have a Hawke-gasm this weekend. He is in two releases, Black phone 2 and Blue Moon (which I believe is just NY/LA), and The Lowdown. Get your Hawke on if you live in NY/LA. Start off with a few episodes of The Lowdown (since the whole season hasn’t dropped), and then head to the cinema for a double feature of Hawke. Afterward, you can walk around with someone you’ve just met for a little under 90 minutes, and hope you reunite with that stranger two more times in your life.

Shifting Gears- They are pulling out all the stops this season in terms of guest stars. More keep popping up, with Gabriel Iglesias swinging by. Is Jenna Elfman a regular? season 2 is better than 1, and Dave’s audio description is the most human description we have. I can’t be convinced AI can make the same choices he does. I wish Pointe 360 would make the AD to Abbott Elementary.

Starting Five- I guess this is a series now. Having not seen basketball in eight years, I expect to not know the players, but James Harden used to be my favorite player, so I’m stoked to see him here, as well as Kevin Durant. Shockingly, Brawny James is not featured. Shockingly. I thought for sure they would do it just to get LeBron back, since he was featured in the first season. the Audio Description was fine. specifically, I know what James Harden looks like, and that was a solid description in a short span of time on Harden.

Say Something!
