What is it?: Actually done with the participation of Amanda Knox, this limited series dives into her false conviction after being accused of murdering her roommate in Italy, and being railroaded by the detectives and a complicated legal system.

What Works: I can’t say I’m a huge true crime buff. Amanda Knox had enough fire on her story at the time I became aware of it, as a matter of pop culture, but I couldn’t have told you the details, nor was I interested. However, a lot of people were, and I remember there was a TV movie with Hayden Panetierre. Amanda also has popped up in unexpected places since, like doing a cameo on Peacock’s Laid last year. So, I can say that based on the sliver of knowledge, Grace Van Patten did a nice job.

As far as limited series go, this one at least has a perspective. My problem with something like the limited series earlier this year about Natalia Grace is that it came from no perspective, and tried walking an insane fine line between the stories. Then you look at the new season of monster, which is getting backlash for embellishing a lot.

At least this is coming from Amanda’s perspective, so i enjoyed it for that, as she was able to have her story dramatized as she experienced it. Finally, she’s in control of her story to some extent. And the takeaway I had was to never travel to Italy. Not only were the police here deeply troubling and corrupt, in my humble opinion, but that court setup is nuts. She spoke broken Italian, and should have been afforded a translator. Instead, Amanda is constantly berated in a language she doesn’t fluently speak, and then if she “lies”, they hold it against her.

I’ll remember this far longer for taking away my desire to see Italy. But as a series, it is definitely going to be a personal choice. We all manipulate the based on a true story sub genre, and there are so many cases of even little alterations made that probably seem bigger to some.

So, what would i prefer? This isn’t a perfect series, and the last two episodes are in the weeds as it focuses on Amanda after she gets out, but I’d much rather hear her perspective as a victim of sorts, than I would have someone trying to thread the impossible eye with the Natalia Grace story, or taking giant liberties with the Monster series while also coming from a perspective not related at all to the case.

I think where this sufffers is only in streamlining, and knowing where and when to cut off. This show had six episodes of material, but stretched to eight as Amanda reintegrates into society, and seeks absolution from an asshole she never should have needed to talk to again. I get it, it is your life, but I’m not saying I agree with or understand all your choices. depending on how involved you are with this will color how you are able to enjoy it.

The Audio Description: the description was fine, but I was more impressed by the translations. I’m not sure if there was a different dub cast, and then the AD overlay, or if this was done entirely by the AD team, but the translations were done well, and not distractingly just by one voice, like Shogun.

You Might Like it If: you want to know more about Amanda Knox… from Amanda Knox.

You Might Not Like it if: you reached a true crime burnout. Or, you never need to hear the name Amanda Knox again.

Final thoughts: the best thing I can say about this is that it has a clear perspective, which I can’t say is true about every true crime show these days, as fiction seems to triumph over fact. Here, Amanda Knox helped control the narrative, which ultimately made this better.

Fresh: Final Grade: 7.4/10
