Black Mirror- Miley Cyrus’s episode is my nomination for a gateway episode to Black Mirror if you’re trying to introduce your friend to it, and they may not get the eccentricities of other things. Some of the episodes are wickedly smart, highly satirical of our lazy asses, and damning of the future we are headed for. this is not that. This could have been a film in theaters starring Miley Cyrus, without the Black Mirror name, and totally worked. It has shades of M3gan, and we already do things like hologram pop icons, so it isn’t even very science fiction (save for a slight twist with Ashley 2). I liked it. It’s a little goofy and lazy how they break into the house, but that’s part of what makes it so broadly accessible. Nice audio description as well, especially toward the end. The extra who plays the cop should get an award for fiercest commitment to playing a police officer.
Mr Scorsese- The third episode tackles a lot. I didn’t know Marty had such a drug problem it almost killed him, and he was rushed to the hospital. This one covers the era from Raging Bull to The Last Temptation Of Christ, and the backlash against that. This series is brilliant. I hope Apple does another auteur at this level next. Ever film lover should be watching this.
The Chair Company- Props for continuing to get weird, but I’m really not all about this show. Perhaps I will be at the end, since this is becoming a darker comedy each episode. Dave’s description is still great. I suppose this suffices as a Christmas episode?
Crutch- A poorly written spinoff of The Neighborhood with potential. but, man this pilot episode is fucking deadly. It felt like a parody of a sitcom Tracy would have done on SNL. I’m coming back, because writing a pilot is a skill unto itself, but it needs to improve. The Neighborhood gang guest star. This is only on Paramount Plus and not on CBS.
Splinter Cell Deathwatch- One of my new favorite animated shows. Really solid. Feels live action at times, thanks in part to a terrific Liev Schreiber.
Last Week tonight- Yes, what he brought attention to was important, but, the last third of the episode didn’t really work for me. I loved his current stuff in the opener, his main segment is interesting, and then it kinda fell flat at the end. For once. It was bound to happen eventually.
