The Small Screen Diaries: 12/16/25

TV Shows Watched: The American revolution: S1E3 (PBS) with audio description, Percy Jackson: S2E1 (Disney Plus) with audio description, and Landman: S2E1 (Paramount Plus) with audio description

The American Revolution- If you’ve never done Ken Burns before, my God. I feel like I’m getting my learning done. The weird thing is, for a really educational experience, it is somehow entertaining? Even if every episode is really long. The cool kids put this on the PBS app on their phone, and bump up the speed modification. Yeah, I didn’t spend two hours on this, but it was still over an hour. They just talk a bit faster, and it didn’t affect my enjoyment. if you’ve never played around with it, 1.25X is great if you don’t need to (or can’t) look at the screen. You shouldn’t even notice it. This docuseries is tremendous. It should sweep the Emmys. Lots of great voice cast without me even needing iMDB. I’ve heard Paul Giamatti, Tom Hanks, Claire Danes, Keith David, Meryl Streep, and some others I’m sure I’m forgetting.

Percy Jackson- I didn’t like Season 1 audio description. you need to know that. the characters were poorly described. But this is Season 2, and I wouldn’t expect any other show to redefine characters, so I can’t put that on Percy. If I seem more upbeat this time around, it is because we have far less character introductions. They’re still ignoring the intentionally diverse casting, but I think there are maybe two new characters in the premiere? Plus, whatever they were doing with the sisters. Percy suddenly has this foreign exchange Cyclops his mom took in, Tyson, and the writing around his intro is so clunky. He feels so forced into the plot, and not organic at all. The plot twist in the first episode is so obvious as a result. Percy is trying to find Grover, and he has to go back to Hogwarts. Wait… that’s another franchise.

Landman- Billy bob Thornton is back to once again carry this show on his shoulders. Demi Moore has a bit more (lol) screentime in the first episode, and has risen in billing. She’s above Ali Larter, so I hope they use her now as a co-lead. She didn’t do much last season. The rest of the cast is less grating now as they settle into their roles, and we get Sam Elliot, though his intro is not really well written either. Taylor Sheridan isn’t trying anymore. He’s making bank, his shows are everywhere, and he’s suffering from Ryan Murphy Syndrome. The audio description was fine though. No complaints.
