I was thwarted by phone calls yesterday. I didn’t even write a review. I’m aghast. Agog. A gay. I’m up one show from yesterday, but I’m not sure that’s enough to do the list before the thoughts.
SNL: Melissa McCarthy (Peacock) with audio description- Keep it together! No, I actually like the fact that the narrrator giggles, since the show is supposed to be funny, and live. Even for a streaming description, it reminds us this once aired live… for real. However, I wonder if in the era of Karens and Snowflakes and the Babadook, if “like a crazy person” in the audio description wasn’t a turn off for the more sensitive viewers. Then again, why are sensitive viewers watching SNL? So while tripping into that phrase on SNL may not get a reaction, it might if you end up in live description for something where the Karens and Snowflakes that decide the winds are or are not blowing and damn them for having the audacity to do so, will find the choice of words to be… triggering. Probably, because they are… well… you know.
Matlock: Season 2, Episode “Billy Is Still Here” (Paramount Plus) with audio description- This show is fun, and a bit campy. Beau Bridges is really leaning into the Sith Lord thing a bit much. He asks Sara to spy on his son, for reasons that are a complete lie. though, you have to wonder, what was in Julian’s date book he needed pictures of? Meanwhile, Maddie tries to repair her relationship with Olympia, while defending nuns who believe in harm reduction, and are facing eviction. I have no idea what season 4,5,6, etc. look like, but Kathy Bates makes me wish for all the best, and the audio description is reliable and did exactly what it needed to do.
