The Small Screen Diaries: 01/18/26

Happy MLK Day. Celebrate it because it still matters.

TV Shows Watched: Starfleet Academy: S1E1 (Paramount Plus) with audio description, Star Wars Visions: S2E3 (Disney Plus) with audio description, The Lowdown: S1E8 (Disney Plus) with audio description, SNL: Ariana grande (Peacock) with audio description, and Breaking Bad: S3E7 (Netflix) with audio description

Starfleet Academy- Paul Giamatti clearly read the scripts, because his hammy over the top performance matches what the show is, while others try and make the show something it isn’t We see a young boy, Caleb, have his mother ripped away from him, he grows up to be a troublemaker, and is invited to join the Starfleet Academy run by holly Hunter, who was responsible for separating him from his mom, but she feels really bad about it. She’s making up for lost time, not by reuniting him, but the possibility that by joining the Academy, maybe one day. Giamatti is hilarious as the over the top cartoonish villain, and there’s an angry Jamaican here that I was bristled by at first, but also loved their over the top approach. the only way this survives is by embracing its camp\. This lacks the gravitas of Picard, and is probably the worst trek show to date. The AD was fine, but I don’t have a firm grasp on all the races of aliens and who is what. I know we have a hologram though, because why not.

Star Wars Visions- Trek reminded me I never finished Visions. I haven’t finished it because I’m bored. The AD isn’t my favorite track. It doesn’t matter how I listen to it, it doesn’t sound like it was processed and mixed at the right level. It sounds of lower quality, like Heated Rivalry. Starfleet Academy sounded great. So did the next show, which I also watched on Disney Plus.

The Lowdown- I forgot to finish this a while ago. I don’t think I can review it, simply because I barely remember it. this was a show that was floating in the middle for me, neither great enough to lavish praise, or bad enough to tear it apart. Shows in the middle, I need to remember, because every little detail matters in a binary Fresh/Rotten world. I know it could have been better, and the acting was solid, but if you love Ethan Hawke, he’s better in blue Moon. The AD here was solid, as usual from Tansy Alexander.

SNL- The opening was fun. I liked weekend update. Cher is killing it for 79. Ariana is funny. I’ll miss Boen. There was a little part in the description that mentioned they addded something that wasn’t in the dress rehearsal. I’m wondering… do I need to know that? I mean, it’s fun, but for the audience’s purpose, isn’t it like breaking the fourth wall? It happened when they transitioned during Weekend Update, and Boen was joined by Aidy Bryant. Just food for thought.

Breaking Bad- hank beats the shit out of Jesse, Walt realizes he needs to eat some crow, and Hank has a horrible, no good, really bad day. With a couple bursts of violence, and some sludge leaking from a machine, there was plenty of great description here.

Say Something!
