The Wrecking Crew

Disclaimer: I’m a blind film critic. this film has audio description on Amazon.

You can’t just throw Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista together in any film and sell it. They need actual material. This is a mistake we keep repeating, especially for Bautista, who spent last year floundering in forgettable dystopian garbage like Afterburner and In The Lost Lands. He did seem like he was really working hard to find the right directors and the right projects, and I don’t know why they’ve abandoned him. Momoa on the other hand is clearly down for anything that hints at representing his Hawaiian culture. I can see why they wanted to do it, but they probably shouldn’t have.

the Wrecking Crew is a copy/paste amalgamation of previous murder mysteries, estranged brothers, and dark secrets. When their dad is killed mysteriously, two estranged brothers (Momoa and Bautista) team up, reluctantly, to figure out who did it. Why did their dad have to die? Was it for the dildo flash drive? Perhaps the hidden compartment in his surfboard will reveal some deeper truth.

Lots of films are basic, and become star vehicles. The problem here is that these two are the same star. it is written like Momoa and Bautista are polar opposites, but really, they are so similar in nature, it would have been better to play to their strengths. A much funnier joke would be that the brothers are the same, don’t realize it, but everyone else keeps pointing it out. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Devito they are not.

I like both of these actors independently, even if they seem unable to read a script. I’m sure the payday is nice. I hope we can find them better projects in the future. This is barely competently directed. The director of Blue Beetle is still trying to blend humor and action, though with reduced results. He makes some odd choices. there’s a moment where he focuses on the dead body of a woman on top of a car, and the manifested drama behind it feels like we’re cutting to a Chapter 2, or another episode. He sets up that scene like you would the shoe drop moment at the end of an episode.

I enjoyed the supporting cast more, with Stephen Root and Jacob Batalan being standouts, and temeura Morrison also supporting.

Amazon had a rough 2025. I might have been the only one who enjoyed Play date, but at what cost? G20, Duplicity, Heads of State, War Of the Worlds, the Pickup, and Play Dirty were all below average, and they somehow made lasse hallstrom direct The Map That Leads To you. Baffling.

The Wrecking Crew is a less promising start to 2026 than last years You’re Cordially Invited, which while not an instant classic, certainly was more entertaining and catered to its leads. this one could sustain Momoa or Bautista, but it needed the other brother to be more of a Pete Davidson type, or something even sillier like a Boen Yang. If you are going to claim night and day, then go for it. Mentioning they are step brothers just doesn’t cut it.

Unfortunately, the Wrecking Crew lives up to its title, destroying the hopes that Amazon has set itself up for a resurgence in 2026. it is just as instantly forgettable as their previous releases, and tries to convince you two action stars are different when they really aren’t.
