The Small Screen Diaries: 02/23/26

Hot Take: And this works for both sides, so they can do it no matter who is delivering it. But, why doesn’t a network offer counterprogramming like the Puppy Bowl to the State Of The Union. “Did you watch the orange guy give the StateOf The Union?” No, but I did watch an orange tabby cat lick himself on the State Of The Mew-union.” I’m just pitching pure Gold here.

TV Shows Watched: A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms: S1E6 (HBO MAX) with audio description, Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials: S1E3 (Netflix) with audio description, High Potential: S2E11 (Disney Plus) with audio description, The Burbs: S1E1 (Peacock) with audio description, and Dawsons Creek: S1E2 (Netflix) no audio description

A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms- A show behind us. Hopefully, I’ll remember to do a full review, but my overall take was excellent audio description, especially in Episode 5, and a series that started on shaky ground, but got better instead of worse. the last two episodes, it certainly was far more tonally balanced, and ends making me want a second season instead of not.

Seven Dials- Oddly, this limited series ends in a way that feels like they could do a second season, even if the mystery is totally wrapped up. A curious ending makes me wonder what they plan to do with it. I don’t think I’ll review it. Sometimes, shows that are right in the middle are the hardest to review, to quantify in a binary world if something is fresh or rotten, when it is almost a coin toss. At times silly, at times engaging, well acted, but perhaps overplays its premise at the end. I wouldn’t tell you to watch, but I also wouldn’t tell you not to.The main girl was delightful though.

High Potential- A great, really fun mystery. the AD team here did use the phrase “grabs a carton of drink”, which isn’t English, and is vague. “Grabs a carton of a drink?” More importantly, even if you can’t see the carton to determine what it is, it actually is stated later as being milk. It is actually oddly relevant as it opens a door about allergies, and how he picked the almond milk. So, you knew what the drink was, you knew its significance mattered, and you still went with drink. its these little things that pile up, and when a show like Will Trent gets a new AD company, I’m not sad to see the old one go.

The Burbs- Surprisingly way better than I thought it would be, though the episode is a bit long for what is ultimately a dark comedy. A strong cast looks to help this series stand out from its iconic cult classic origins. The crying baby sounded fake as hell. he sounded like he was on loop, and no matter where he was supposedly crying from, he sounded the exact same distance away. This isn’t a problem, as Clint Eastwood got caught using a super fake baby in American Sniper, and still got a Best Picture Oscar nomination.

Dawson’s Creek- Memories. Nostalgia. Pacey is totally going to get with his teacher. I realized that the show is about this Spielberg inspired teen making movies and dreaming about becoming a filmmaker, while the star of his films is Michelle Williams. You can’t tell me Spielberg didn’t watch Dawson’s Creek when casting The Fableman’s, which is a story about a teenager who makes movies, some of which have Michelle Williams in them. Like, there’s only just so much happenstance and serendipity in this world.

  1. “Grabs a carton of drink” is fine English to me but I wouldn’t have used it here. Maybe “grabs a drink carton” but I haven’t watched the show to have the full context.

Say Something!
