All Her Fault: Season 1

Disclaimer: I’m a blind film critic. This TV series has audio description on Peacock.

All Her fault is very much one of those shows that comes along, and it makes me give other lessser shows more time in my watchlist, because this show really does get better as it keeps going.Sarah Snook takes center stage as Marissa, the mother to a young boy who is taken, presumably by a nanny that worked for one of the other mothers. Dakota Fanning plays Jenny, the other mother, who joins Marissa in her tireless battle to return her son to her. Marissa’s husband, Peter (Jake Lacy) seems to be hiding some secrets from his work, and a detective that we see is at least morally ambiguous (Michael Pena) is leading the investigation. We’ve also got an interestingly dramatic performance from Abby Elliot, who plays Peter’s sister, and Sophia Lillis is the assumed kidnapper.

Right off the beginning, the red herrings are everywhere. The title suggests it was her fault, possibly Marissa’s. A shot as part of the title sequence seems to suggest everyone is a suspect. With everyone harboring a secret, or having some connection to the disappearance, it becomes a guessing game of who is really to blame, and whose fault it is.

I really enjoyed Michael Pena as the detective who is all about the rules, unless he needs to break them. he’s someone who follows the letter of the law, until the letter no longer suits him. I had hoped Michael Pena’s character from Jack Ryan would have led to a solo series, but unfortunately Amazon abandoned that project. Pena continues to prove how reliable he is, and how more and more casting directors need to take notice.

of course Sarah Snook is good. There’s no question there. It is a different flavor than her emmy Winning turn on Succession, playing a mother recounting every possible mistake she made that might have led to her son’s abduction. Jake lacy plays the strait laced suburban dad well, and he’s started to really expand his dramatic weight, especially in this. Fanning can get a little lost, and honestly deserves a show of her own, rather than backing up Snook. With her sister getting an Oscar nomination this year, it seems odd that Dakota’s career feels like it is stalling.

I certainly have noticed some shows recently where they really do get exponentially better as the season progresses, moving away from a standard format you’ve seen,to something rewarding, like building a very complicated and highly intoxicating puzzle.

the audio description was fine. there are little clues throughout that are pointed out, so you do feel like when you get to the end you heard everything you needed to for everything to make sense. It might feel lacking in general terms, like with the decor of a house we keep passing through, but it is more focused on the details it knows will be relevant.

This is more than worth your time. All Her Fault is an arresting thriller that keeps you guessing as to who is to blame, and hoping the kid is found and returned safely. A standout performance from Michael Pena.

Fresh: 8/10
