The Small Screen Diaries: 03/16/26

Top of the morning to you! It’s St. Patricks day! I used to have a hat that said Kiss Me I’m Irish. It never worked. Make sure to wear your green today, and watch Irish films, perhaps like the excellent Kneecap, or the Hulu original series Say Nothing. The Banshees Of Inishiron is also a solid choice. I’d love to say The Secret of kells, though I’m unaware of that film having audio description. I’ve always heard lovely things about Dairy Girls, and for the horror minded, there’s always Leprechaun, if any audio description exists for it or any of its sequels. Now is also the perfect moment to have some Lucky Charms, or a Shamrock Shake, and kick back with a Guinness.

TV Shows Watched: His And Hers: S1E6 (Netflix) with audio description, Monarch: S1E2 (Apple) with audio description, Will Trent: S4E5 (Disney Plus) with audio description, Bel Air: S4E2 (Peacock) with audio description, Star Search: S1E? (Netflix) with audio description, Have I Got News for You: S4E8 (HBo MAX) no audio description, and Celebrity Jeopardy: S4E1 (Disney Plus) with audio description

His And Hers- OMG. The ending to this show is nuts. This is one of those endings I’ll remember for the rest of my life. This is the kind of crazy shit people remember, like the series finales to St Elsewhere or Newhart, finales so memorable, people know them without having seen the show. Netflix had a show a few years ago called Behind Her Eyes. That show had a totally bonkers ending, and His and Hers does as well. Impossible to see coming. What’s even more bonkers is the show does actually ed with a presumable twist, before it says hold all the beers, and drives the plot like Thelma and Louise did right over a cliff.I loved it. I’ve been not over or underwhelmed by the series until now, and that ending earns it a thumbs up in my book.

Monarch- Now that these characters have all converged, they catch up a bit. We still get spiky monsters, and these people clearly worship what I can only assume will be a Kraken. The AD here is solid.

Will Trent- They wrap up the bank robber storyline from earlier, and is it just me, or did you want those crazy kids to work it out in the end? They make it even worse by giving him a solid reason for everything. I felt for the guy, and his chemistry should stick around somehow. He’d certainly make the show far more interesting. I’d be down for the show to keep him around for Faith.

Bel-Air- I totally forgot why Will and Carlton needed to go to court. But they got through it just fine, because of course they did. Also, while Lou plays the piano a bit, and says Will inherited his musical talent on the piano, all they did was sit Will down and have him play chord progressions. It’s one of the least impressive things you could play. I recently watched a movie where there was this buildup to a character playing piano, and what they played was Heart and Soul. Did you know Ryan Gosling actually took piano lessons so he could play in La La Land? Commit to the bit, or have the director shoot the actor so we can’t see his hands, and have him play some real music. This other stuff… to anyone who understands it is the equivalent of Lou having a scene with Will, talking about how Will inherited his talent in basketball, and all they do is pass the ball back and forth, not even seeing if he can do ball handling or shoot.

Star Search- I’m surprised they voted off the blind girl. Not because she’s the best singer, but actually because she isn’t, and that hasn’t been a problem until now. I just assumed she would ride to the finale. I was surprised that didn’t happen. Magic Boy doing the snowflake trick was so dumb. Liz’s audio description is still fantastic.

Have I Got News For You- Love this show and this panel. I wasn’t familiar with either of the comedians they brought on, but they were both funny. This show could actually benefit from audio description since it relies so heavily on images.

Celebrity Jeopardy- Rachel Dratch, Mark Duplass, and Katie Nolan are back to earn more money for charity. I had a celebrity preference, but then I had a charity preference. So, my mood shifted. More people should have gotten final Jeopardy correct. It truly wasn’t that hard. The AD here is AI, leading me to say… Roundabout should do Celebrity Jeopardy, since their Pop Culture Jeopardy audio description was actually pretty solid. It was what the show needed. I’m not entirely sure what this description is trying to accomplish other than saving money.
