Disclaimer: I’m a blind film critic. I watch films with audio description, and this film has a track provided by Adrenaline Studios.
Theroux is a brave man to assemble a documentary where he passively interviews some of the most toxic masculine influencers in existence, all for our entertainment. I don’t know who any of them are, were, or will be, and I don’t care to know. It was just enough to keep this documentary interesting, but mostly Theroux sinks his own documentary by being too passive in every encounter. he never pushes hard questions, seemingly afraid he’ll lose the interview, and doesn’t seem to know how to contend with masculine influencers who film him as he films them. This works only as a soft introduction to anyone whose social feeds have been respectful in nature, to a darker world out there of bro culture set to monetization. They have wild thoughts and theories, and they often lean hard right. They believe a woman should be in a monogamous relationship with them as they play the field.
But as far as how they got here, what makes them tick, what lurks in the hearts of men, this shadow does not know. He also doesn’t seem to care. I’m thinking he thought this would be cool, to expose a counter culture. The problem is, these guys are already live streaming it. Even in his biggest get, he sees some toxic fans attack and beat a gay man who showed up in public thinking he was about to meet his date, or hookup, or whatever. Even though the influencer says he won’t use the video, and takes it down, he still uses it and breaks it into clips.
If you wanted to know how these young men got here, so you could make sure your kid stays away from all those things, Theroux never dives into the psyche. he never aims for a deeper meaning or truth. he’s chasing likes and subscribes as much as they are, except his comes in the form of a Netflix deal.
I lean positive here, because I didn’t feel like he manipulated them or us, and didn’t fake it or tell us about a ton of things that happened off screen. He also did introduce me to a world I want no part of, am appalled exists, and knowledge truly is power.
From an audio description standpoint, as an American, the guy they picked to perform the AD sounds too much like Theroux, and I had a hard time figuring out who was talking. Not a great sign, and I wonder what a female performer would have done for a film that rarely lets women speak. She would ahve likely stood out even more. this is why casting in audio description is so important.Make good choices.
It’s pretty much a coin toss. Inside The Manosphere isn’t that remarkable, often failing to truly push its subjects to reveal an inner or actual truth, but it does dive into a disturbing counter culture we should be very afraid of.
