The Small Screen Diaries: 04/12/26

TV Shows Watched: The audacity: S1E1 (AMC Plus) WITH audio description, Maul: Shadow Lord: S1E2 (Disney Plus) with audio description, Predator Of Seville: S1E1 (Netflix) with audio description, Bel Air: S4E3 (Peacock) with audio description, The real Housewives Of Rhode Island: S1E1 (Peacock) with audio description, All’s Fair: S1E9 (Disney Plus) with audio description, Matlock: S2E12 (Paramount Plus) with audio description

The Audacity- yes. AMC Plus had the audacity to add audio description on a smidge of titles, including this new series, so I used it as the guinea pig. It worked. I got my audio description for the whole thing. It was human, pretty decent, and this show is boring. that’s the rub, is that The Audacity is some version of a comedy, played out like a Silicon Valley version of Your Friends and Neighbors, where there is clearly comedy, but our lead is morally flexible, which supposedly sparks interest. Billy Magunssen has done comedy before, and done it better. I just didn’t find much interesting here. I’m more engaged by the supporting cast than the lead. It seems to be about a wealthy tech CEO whose company is on the verge of collapse, but he has an algorithm that will allow him to invade privacy, which he starts to use to force the hand of some people close to him. Is that the series?

Maul: Shadow Lord- More excellent audio description as maul faces a Jedi Master, outsmarting him and getting away. i get Andor vibes here, as Maul is doing a lot more planning than you may have thought his Phantom Menace character was capable of. Probably the best audio description of the day.

The Predator Of Seville- This is an intriguing docuseries at Netflix, where an American tourist is raped, buries her experience, only later to finally talk about it, learning that the guy who raped her has been doing this a lot, for a long time. Solid audio description for a documentary, though it often mentions there is a dramatic reenactment, without ever being able to explain it. So it is happening, but what is being reenacted?

Bel Air- Carlton and Will are still trying to climb that social ladder, Jazz hooks up with a friend of the Banks family, and Carlton tramples over the experience of Amira. The AD here is fine.

The Real Housewives of Rhode Island- I’ve been meaning to clock this franchise at some point when a new series started, and this is insufferable madness. The franchise started with at least some recognizable faces, but now we’re just picking random women that will cause drama on camera. I do not know how you people watch it, but it does have audio description. it is a negligible amount of audio description, as the series has a stable of women that need to talk all the time, so putting AD on here was an easy paycheck for someone. If 100 words were spoken by the AD performer, in the hour long episode, I’d be shocked. I’d be shocked if fifty had been.I’m not watching this madness again. If you love this stuff, great. good for you.

All’s Fair- I actually finished this hot garbage. Sarah Paulson is terrific, really navigating a bizarre character. Naomi Watts has a tough time, and the show tries to throw her a bone in the final episode, but it is too little too late. I’ve seen worse shows, like the one right before this.

Matlock- Maddie has to defend Shay, which compromises her 50th Anniversary. Maddie’s husband in this is like a life goal for me. I either would like to one day be as kind and nice as him, or be married to someone as kind and nice as him. He’s the lowkey MVP of the cast. So, I tip my hat to Sam Anderson, a prolific character actor, and the unsung hero of Matlock.

Say Something!
