Going In blind: The comeback Trail

Originally listed for a 2020 debut, this comedy just released this year rather unceremoniously onto video on demand, and later Paramount Plus. I’m sure when you hear that, along with the realization this film has no available audio description, you’d assume it was just another critically underfunded film that just didn’t have it in the budget. My counter to that would be, if the stars of this film, who likely all hand nice paychecks, contributed a little portion they wouldn’t even notice, no matter the budget, they could have collectively made their film accessible. Starring Oscar winners Robert DeNiro, Tommy … Continue reading Going In blind: The comeback Trail

The Small Screen Diaries- The Weekly Rankings

Another week, another list of everything that is in some form on my watchlist… until I either finish it or cancel it. Does any show get the axed this week? Joining the rankings for the first time are Yes Chef (Peacock), Bosch Legacy (amazon), Bet (Netflix), Overcompensating (Amazon), Octopus (Amazon), Poker Face (Peacock), Duster (MAX), The Secrets We Keep (Netflix), Bad thoughts (Netflix), No Other Land (Hulu), and Murderbot (Apple Plus). Winner: Andor (Disney Plus) with audio description- it had a big jump last week after episodes 7, 8, and 9 blew me away, and after finishing and closing strong, … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- The Weekly Rankings

TV News: Sadly, the Bondsman will not live to see another day. Amazon has buried Kevin Bacon’s supernatural horror super quick after just one season. This is not Bacon’s first short-lived show at Amazon, so my suggestion would be to work elsewhere where they appreciate your work. TV Shows Watched: The Handmaids Tale: S6E8 (Hulu) Finally With Audio Description, Murderbot: S1E1 (Apple Plus) with audio description, Survival Of The Thickest: S2E8 (Netflix) with audio description, Drag Race All Stars: S10E2 (Paramount Plus) with audio description, 911: S8E18 (Hulu) with audio description, The Rehearsal: S1E5 (MAX) with audio description, The Walking … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 05/18/25

Neighborhood Watch

I think everything is always about context, and honesty. While there is a proliferation of critics out there, and the studios likely would like to reign it in by deciding who gets to make it to the party in the first place, they are missing out on the fact that film has changed. The way we watch and access film has shifted, and the spread of critics doesn’t mean noise is winning all the time, it means that people often are able to find critics that speak to them. There’s something in finding yourself in a piece, or in someone … Continue reading Neighborhood Watch

Shadow Of The Wolf

There’s a film out there on video-on-demand, which thanks to Lionsgate, has audio description. I reviewed it a few weeks back on my YouTube channel, and it just isn’t an inspiring film to talk about. It is an Italian werewolf horror, and it is just interesting to think that as Jane Austen Wrecked My Life opens today, this random international title lucked into audio description. There’s a reason, and his name is Christopher lambert. there are quite a few low budget films being pushed out at Lionsgate with actors who are big names, but don’t star in the films they … Continue reading Shadow Of The Wolf

Going In Blind: Jane Austen Wrecked My Life

Ive been trying to take back the phrase “going in blind”, which is used by so many sighted people to just mean “I have no idea what this is, but I’m doing it anyway.” I literally go in blind to everything, whether I know what it is or not. But, to take the somewhat co-opted ableist approach, I went in blind on this one, both possible meanings of that phrase. Sony Pictures Classics offered me an advance of Jane Austen Wrecked My life, and I really didn’t know anything about this except for some basic logline material. The movie spends … Continue reading Going In Blind: Jane Austen Wrecked My Life

The Small Screen Diaries- 05/15/25

TV News: Again, as of me typing this, The Handmaids Tale: S6E8 still does not have audio description. This would be more shocking, or more of a grace period for a little mistake if Hulu didn’t routinely miss out on next day audio description, and not include audio description day and date on titles coming straight to them from the house of Mouse. it truly is that this service does not care. if you have Hulu but not Disney Plus, did you check out any of that content on loan? Because, those Star Wars films have audio description on Disney … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 05/15/25

Deaf President Now

Sometimes I feel the weight of the world on my shoulders. Often, actually, as the lack of blind film critics means that my experiment could either lead to more of me, and inspire others to pursue representation in the field, or studios could have an immediate and negative reaction to my existence. for example, can an extremely niche critic like myself have a place on the Tomatometer when the overwhelming majority of people who seek a score do not use the accessibility I need, or people like me? I am acutely aware that while there are critics circles and guilds … Continue reading Deaf President Now

TV News: Day Two. the Handmaids Tale: S6E8 still has no audio description. Still. This is preventing me from moving forward, and it is a true statement as of this writing (as I just checked before posting this). Maybe it will change later today. TV Shows Watched: Black mirror: S1E2 (Netflix) with audio description, Andor: S2E10 (Disney plus) with audio description, Ghosts: S4E20 (Paramount Plus) with audio description, Will Trent: S3E17 (Hulu) with audio description, The Pitt: S1E3 (MAX) with audio description, The Stolen Girl: S1E2 (Disney Plus) no audio description, Bad Thoughts: S1E1 (Netflix) with audio description, The daily … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 05/14/25

Fuck, Marry, Kill

Yes, technically the title is bleeped, but what do you think the word could be? Four letters, begins with F? Ford? Flop? Foot? From? Only one actually makes sense if you’ve ever had the pleasure (or displeasure) of being stuck in the game of Fuck, Marry, kill. The game usually is three names, and you have to fuck one, marry another, and kill the remainder. It is kind of a very violent twist, as it isn’t just like the one you don’t pick gets to go play some pickleball or whatever else losers do, it is a commitment to murder … Continue reading Fuck, Marry, Kill

The Ruse

Who doesn’t love a good mystery with a twist? 2025 should be the year of The Ruse. We’re in peak true crime, with podcasts on this topic still trending, and continuing to often translate into films or series. 20/20, which once was a newsmagazine at least somewhat comparable to 60 Minutes seems now determined to inundate you with scintillating crimes just redy to spark your inner Jessica Fletcher. We thrive on solving crimes, which is why we have so many shows that all feel like a mystery of the week, from Elzabeth to Will Trent, Tracker to Poker Face, someone … Continue reading The Ruse

The Small Screen Diaries- 05/13/25

TV News: Hulu failed to upload the new episode of The Handmaids Tale with its accompanying audio description, so I was unable to watch it. Some shows, I don’t mind because I know audio description isn’t coming, so there’s no point in waiting, and other shows like Will trent, when they don’t get next air audio description, I care about less. But, I’m not advancing any further on the show that has been topping my weekly rankings until Hulu makes it right. I’m tired of constantly having this problem with Hulu. Why is it so exclusive to Hulu? Why is … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 05/13/25
