The Small Screen diaries- 06/28/25

And we’re back. Thanks to all for the birthday wishes. But, what did i actually watch on my birthday? Not much. I did also watch Magazine Dreams, but a lot of your birthday is spent talking to people calling you once a year on your birthday. even though I only had two of those calls, they both broke an hour. How are you? Do you still work? That’s amazing. Wow. Inspirational. So… you go outside? Wow. Amazing. Inspirational. So you can find things to do? Wow. Amazing. inspirational. Sorry to keep spamming those of you looking for just the meat and potatoes of the diaries, but today is my birthday. As I’m writing this, so tomorrow, I’ll be reflecting on my birthday, which is what this column usually is. I did a long video for my youtube, so I wanted to do at least some acknowledgement. As another year goes by, I’d like to thank everyone who has helped me along the way, or taken a chance on the concept of a blind film critic. There are still plenty of narrators and writers I would love to talk … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 06/27/25

The Amateur

For a while we seemed to be stuck on “a particular set of skills” movies coming out of the success of taken. Then, John Wick ultimately took that and spun it into a slightly new aim. With that, they showed this expanded world, with shady organizations, and other like minded agents and assassins. just look at how much effort Jason Statham’s The Beekeeper went into expanding the lore of a film, without knowing if a sequel would come. A sequel is coming, and a sequel might come for the Amateur as well. the Amateur feels like it is a larger … Continue reading The Amateur

Going In Blind: hot Milk

Just to be transparent, this opens in theatres today, and I expect it to have audio description. I was given an advance screener, but I didn’t rush to the mountaintop because I didn’t want to be one of the first out of the gate to say this isn’t that great. hot Milk is a directorial debut, and an adaptation, releasing from IFC with a plot I should be more intrigued by, but sadly not. Emma Mackey and Fiona Shaw play daughter and mother. Mom has been unable to walk since her daughter was four, and they are seeking more medical … Continue reading Going In Blind: hot Milk

Quote Of Yesterday: “I don’t watch gay movies. I like action movies.”- Random Blind Woman Who Was Unfortunately Called On To Speak From The virtual Audience. I didn’t get a chance to respond, which is probably a good thing. So, here we go… dear Karen, you felt comfortable labeling gay movies as a broad genre, instead of a special interest group, so the question begs would you have been comfortable saying you didn’t like black movies? is it OK for me to follow up with I don’t like girly movies? Or, I don’t watch films with women? get back in … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 06/26/25

Going In blind: rent Free

Releasing this weekend, Rent Free is a buddy comedy for the Gen Z and Millennial crowd. the promise broken of an American dream flows through this indie comedy about two best friends, who are financially strapped, and try to live without having to spend money. it subverts the immediate need to turn itself into a romantic comedy where instead of being best friends, they must have a realization that they were meant for each other. instead, it focuses more on them living in Austin with dreams of saving up to move to New York. it didn’t have audio description, which … Continue reading Going In blind: rent Free

K-Pop Demon Hunters

I would love to say that as an individual critic, I also know every project in development, and am fully aware of all upcoming releases on all platforms. That would be a lie. A few days before its scheduled release, I got spam from Netflix letting me know something called “K-Pop Demon Hunters” was coming on Friday, and that was all I needed. Sometimes, a title is just so weird that you have to check it out. Vikings Vs dinosaurs? Sure. Alien Vs Annie? The sun isn’t coming out tomorrow. Vienna Boys Choir Detective Agency? I guess. But this one … Continue reading K-Pop Demon Hunters

The Small Screen Diaries- The Weekly Rankings

A handful of new shows joined the fray this week. Some of them are older shows, like Mindhunter (Netflix), which looks to be getting the same film revival treatment as Peaky Blinders, and others are new shows, like We Were Liars (Amazon), The Waterfront (Netflix), and Revival (peacock). So as a complimentary side list. To my daily diaries, here’s my ongoing rankings of every show on my watchlist from the past week, including shows I finished like forever (Netflix) and the NArrow road to The deep North (Amazon). Winner: Hacks (MAX) with audio description- I have one episode left for … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- The Weekly Rankings

Death Of A Unicorn

A24 should be careful. If they push out too many films without their signature “A24 vibes”, their cult following might shift. Of course, i always thought the worship around a distributor was odd. They buy movies and release them, and A24 pushes out a lot of indies. I suppose they have nabbed a certain amount of burgeoning auteur works to blur that line, but Death Of A unicorn is surprisingly mainstream and silly for the studio that just had a plethora of Awards friendly titles last year. this is from the studio that just gave you the Brutalist, Babygirl, Sing … Continue reading Death Of A Unicorn
