The Small Screen diaries: The Weekly Rankings

Another day, another dollar. Another week, another set of shows being ranked. Some new shows debuted, like FUBAR (Netflix), Next Gun NYC (peacock), and Sherlock and daughter (MAX), but also a great time to catch up on some old shows, including Euphoria (MAX), Breaking Bad (Netflix), King of The Hill (Hulu), and Futurama (Hulu). WINNER: Hacks (MAX) with audio description- Hacks wins the week again. Two episodes still left, so it shouldn’t be losing its spot anytime soon. But, can Hacks sweep the Emmys? That’s the question. Justice for Hannah Einbinder! Runner Up: Sirens (Netflix) with audio description- I’m obsessed. … Continue reading The Small Screen diaries: The Weekly Rankings

Sinners

Ryan Coogler is on fire. Don’t be alarmed. it is a good kind of fire, like the heat a bright young filmmaker brings to every project. I think every project of Coogler’s is either an A or A-, which is a strong consistency rate. most directors can’t have that level of output, and for Coogler, he’s been doing it through other people’s stories, until now. Sinners is his first original film, not based on a previous work or someone’s life story, and it shows us the kind of director Coogler could be when not having to work within the confines … Continue reading Sinners

The Small Screen Diaries- 06/12/25

June 12th, 2016. It has been nine years since the Pulse massacre, and while I was not there, and didn’t lose any friends, I did have friends who lost people, and I witnessed our community react to an act of hate against the LGBTQ community. I never can let this day pass without acknowledging that 49 people were lost, and all they wanted to do was have fun and dance. They were killed for who they were. Our country still isn’t doing enough to push back against homophobia, and under this current administration seems apt to run right into it. … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 06/12/25

Tribeca 2025: We Are pat!

this documentary reminded me a lot of one from last year, Chasing Chasing Amy, where a filmmaker tackled a problematic representation of LGBTQ culture and not only shared how it might have brought them some joy, but also how it is now permanently trapped in time. That phrase we so often use, “it was different back then”, or any comparable phrase to suggest that people in the past really didn’t know any better. In Chasing Chasing Amy, Kevin Smith participated, along with various cast members, to dissect its effect on lesbian culture, and how a cisgender straight white man might … Continue reading Tribeca 2025: We Are pat!

The Small Screen Diaries- The Weekly Rankings

Another week, another set of shows entering, and some exiting either because I finished all currently available episodes, or by force. WINNER: hacks (MAX) with audio description- As I continue to slowly progress and enjoy every episode, I can’t shake the reality that with some of the serious dramas out of the way, hacks is the best thing I’m watching. But, will it be enough to get Hannah Einbinder finally an Emmy? That remains to be seen. Runner Up: Etoile (Amazon) with audio description- Amazon sold their souls to the devil, and revoked their second season renewal for Etoile. Tribeca 2025: I Was Born This Way

We are where we are right now, because someone fought to advance our world a little further than where it was before. This is true broadly, and without really reservation. Everything from indoor plumbing to electricity, totally non-partisan issues, advanced because someone kept pushing it further. However, this is true for so many who don’t have a broad set of rights. People have had to create safe spaces, environments, and lives around the margins allotted. Carl Bean certainly was one of these people for the LGBTQ community, and i was sadly unaware of who he was, and his contributions until … Continue reading Tribeca 2025: I Was Born This Way

The Small Screen Diaries- 06/06/25

TV News: I hate when networks and streamers do this. Amazon, in their bid to take over the world as dastardly as possible, has revoked the initial order for a second season of Etoile. This not only is disrespectful to the creatives, but also the audience, who could have watched the show at their own pace, knowing a second season was guaranteed. But as Hollywood is willing to break that trust more and more, by shelving films that are completed and using them as write offs (Universal just wrote off a completed Pharrell Williams musical, so it isn’t just WBD … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 06/06/25

Mountainhead

HBO tried to slide in at the end of the Emmy consideration window with an original film from Succession creator Jesse Armstrong, making his feature debut. they even managed to get Eli Shiff back to do the audio description, after he narrated Succession. So, even for us, it is supposed to strike the nostalgic chord, and make us feel like this is Succession, and aren’t we so glad it came back? Much like how Succession seemed to take a certain media mogul family to task, without naming them directly, this aims at the ultra rich at a time when the … Continue reading Mountainhead
