Freaky Tales

Freaky Tales (2025)- Pedro Pascal, Jay Ellis, Ben Mendelssohn, Tom Hanks Quick Take: Anthology movies can be a tough sell, because often each segment can be weighed on their own merits. So, while you might like or love all or most, one segment that feels off, or just doesn’t inspire you the same way as the other segments, can change your perception of the totality of the work. For example, with last years Kinds of kindness, i found something in the first two segments, but struggled a bit more with the third and final. For Freaky Tales, I found myself … Continue reading Freaky Tales

Quality Check: The Pale Blue Eye

Occasionally, I get follow up comments about my opinion on the audio description for a film that I saw a while back. The first of these was The pale Blue eye, a film I reviewed a few years ago, but could not remember the audio description for it at all. So, my first quality check in a while, is also a second look. The movie stars Christian Bale, is directed by Scott Cooper, and is on Netflix. It would be classified as a dark/gothic mystery, with a tinge of horror. We get some opening text that is a quote from … Continue reading Quality Check: The Pale Blue Eye

Going In Blind: Goodrich, Getaway, Utopia

Goodrich- There are a host of these coming of middle-age movies, where an aging actor is in some odd place in his life where he’s either stuck, or realizes he’s been making a series of mistakes that he is just now becoming acutely aware of. I suppose, Lost In Translation is probably one of the best examples, but some more lesser discussed examples would be Solitary Man with Michael Douglas, The Land Of Steady Habits with Ben Mendelssohn, and Dan In real Life with Steve Carell. Sometimes these men fall in love, sometimes they rekindle love, sometimes they learn to … Continue reading Going In Blind: Goodrich, Getaway, Utopia

The Small Screen Diaries- 03/27/25

I caught up on The Masked Singer, and it is crazy how quickly I picked up on that clue package and no one else did. It was obvious that the person was referring to someone who had competed on The Masked Singer, but has since passed, and that list is really small. She also hinted at growing up on television, and I immediately got the reference, I immediately knew which previous contestant it was. Also, she clearly asked to self-eliminate, after only one song, because she was in no way the worst performance of the night. I don’t even like … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 03/27/25

The Small Screen Diaries- 03/26/25

This would only qualify as TV news, because some of the actors who were included in the announcement for The Avengers: Doomsday started in shows, but the broad cast announcement had a really odd amalgamation of characters, with some notable omissions. I suppose there still could be a surprise or two they are hiding, but it does feel like some obvious choices aren’t present. for me, when you choose to bring back Robert Downey jr as a different character, there are a handful of characters who need to have that emotionally devastating gut punch of seeing someone they held dear. … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 03/26/25

Going In Blind: The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, Big Boys, American Cats

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever- A faith based holiday offering that doesn’t suffer from some of the poor production values of many underfunded faith based films.Featuring at least a few recognizable names in Judy Greer and Lauren Graham, the supposedly true story features a family of the worst children who find out that church gives out free food, and since they are poor, and their parents are quite literally never around, they start working the church. But, this is the time of the Christmas Pageant, and this church puts on a legendary pageant. This year, the lady who has been … Continue reading Going In Blind: The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, Big Boys, American Cats
