Going In blind: Wildcat, Unstoppable, The Black Box Diaries

Wildcat- for my awards consideration, I did manage to squeeze in Ethan Hawke directing his daughter Maya in a loose biopic of Flanders O’Connor. Maya Hawke has really started to bloom as an actress, and it’s interesting to see her take on a historical figure in this really big swing from Hawke. it certainly doesn’t follow traditional biopic tropes, but instead sees O’Connor moving home to live with her southern belle of a mother (Laura Linney), who has very interesting and offensive thoughts about pretty much anyone who isn’t her. oscilloscope didn’t submit a profile for my awards consideration, so … Continue reading Going In blind: Wildcat, Unstoppable, The Black Box Diaries

The Electric State

The Electric State (Netflix)- Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, Stanley Tucci, Anthony Mackie Years ago I remember when Robopocalypse was being kicked around as a potential summer blockbuster, based on a best-selling novel. I believe Spielberg was actually interested at one time, but likely became more interested in ready Player One. Sometimes it is a blessing in disguise to not have your book turned into a film. I loved the ready Player One book, but not the film. Robopocalypse likely dodged a bullet. What didn’t dodge the bullet is the Electric State. While I have not read the source material, … Continue reading The Electric State

Going In Blind (Playing Catch Up): The First Omen, The Day of The Fight

The First Omen- I finally broke down and had to get this film on my own, despite having Hulu/Disney Plus, the streaming home for this movie, because Disney cannot be bothered to upload the existing theatrical audio description track for their own film. the First Omen was distributed under Disney’s acquired 20th century Fox label, which feels like it is working now as a modern day touchstone for the more adult projects they can’t wholeheartedly slap a Disney logo on. I should not have such a problem with this track. it exists. This is a Disney owned streamer. I did … Continue reading Going In Blind (Playing Catch Up): The First Omen, The Day of The Fight

The Parenting

The Parenting (MAX)- This Movie Feels Tailor Made For Me It is always a cabin in the woods. No one ever rents a haunted condo in Fort Lauderdale on a timeshare. It is always something oddly rustic in these horror movies. I like horror comedies more than straight horror because I feel like it is easier to be funny and poke fun at the genre, than it is to be reliant upon jump scares that don’t work. Most of my favorite horror titles have a tinge of comedy to them, so I was already predisposed to liking this. the cast … Continue reading The Parenting

Going In Blind (Playing Catch Up)- Glitter And Doom, And So It Begins, Zurawski V Texas

Glitter And Doom- One of the best things about getting the for your consideration requests is being made aware of films that you were totally unaware of, and in turn, get to make others more aware. glitter And Doom is a delightful, upbeat, pop/rock original musical that is about two best friends, who are struggling musicians, and also best friends (or maybe more?) and their journey to potential stardom, or total obscurity. Sadly, obscurity looks more likely since this movie seems to have not really registered with audiences. I thought, even without audio description, the movie was a blast. it … Continue reading Going In Blind (Playing Catch Up)- Glitter And Doom, And So It Begins, Zurawski V Texas

Going In Blind (Playing Catch Up)- Better Man, Bird, Elton John: Never Too Late

better man- We failed this movie. this is a great musical. Michael Gracey took the road less traveled in telling the story of Robbie Williams, the British pop icon, who seemingly has no footprint in America. Instead of casting a human like Taron Edgerton to star, he relied on the visual effects team to create a chimpanzee in place of a motion capture actor. It’s a bold move from The Greatest Showman director that I thought paid off. Paramount was one of the few studios to submit screeners with audio description tracks, so I was instantly charmed. i didn’t need … Continue reading Going In Blind (Playing Catch Up)- Better Man, Bird, Elton John: Never Too Late

the Small Screen Diaries- The Weekly Rankings

With some shows exiting since the last rankings, and new entries including the righteous Gemstones, the Wheel Of Time, Adolescence, Dope Theif, Grimmsburg, the Traitors: UK, Denise Richard’s and her Wild Things, 911, and Deli Boys joining, how will the rankings shift? Winner: Cobra Kai (Netflix) with audio description- The final time cobra Kai will be mentioned in a Small Screen Diary. I finally finished the extended final season, and as this is one of my favorite shows on Netflix, I’m opting to let it finish on top. No change from last week. Runner Up: Severance (Apple Plus) with audio … Continue reading the Small Screen Diaries- The Weekly Rankings

going In blind: The Seed Of The Sacred Fig, Mulholland Dr, Sabbath Queen

The Seed of the Sacred Fig- If you thought this one was going to talk about that fantastic audio description track Neon made that you didn’t realize existed, you are going to be sorely disappointed. Sadly, Neon did not put audio description on this film, and I did sit through it. actually, I was given a physical screener for this, so they could have included alternate tracks, but they didn’t. There’s no known audio description, which sucks for those of us who are interested in International Cinema, or are trying to check Oscar nominees off our bucket list for the … Continue reading going In blind: The Seed Of The Sacred Fig, Mulholland Dr, Sabbath Queen

Going In blind (Playing Catch Up)- Little bites, Skincare, The little Rascals

Little Bites- A shudder title. So, if you want the audio description, you will have to find it on a VOD service, or pray it hits Hulu after its run on AMC Plus with the audio description track. I would recommend, with basically every horror movie ever, to choose audio description if this is the accessibility you need. However, I’m not sure if I would recommend Little Bites. the movie features a woman who at the beginning of the film has a monster of sorts living in a room in her house. She has to go feed him, and he bites … Continue reading Going In blind (Playing Catch Up)- Little bites, Skincare, The little Rascals

Going In Blind (Playing Catch Up): The Forge and both versions of Speak No Evil

The Forge- This is why I’m trying to play catch up. I don’t remember this audio description track at all. I know it had one when it dropped on Netflix, but I do not remember it in the slightest. What I remember about the Forge was thinking that the film would be much better off just as a faith based drama, that this really bizarre recruitment tool for fulfillment centers. Sure, the main story is about a young man who is learning to be a better person, and more reliable, and his job happens to be at a warehouse, but … Continue reading Going In Blind (Playing Catch Up): The Forge and both versions of Speak No Evil

Going In blind (Playing Catch Up): The Six Triple Eight, Sweethearts, Coup d’Chance, on Deadly Ground

Sweethearts- For Thanksgiving, MAX released a raunchy college comedy. i didn’t realize this was actually themed for Thanksgiving, and was deep in the middle of awards season, so i didn’t watch this until around Christmas, and even then, it took a little bit longer before I even put my video review out. So now, during Spring Break, I’m talking about a straight-to-MAX R-rated forgettable mess that is one of the least viewed videos on my channel. If it didn’t have audio description, I’d delete the damn video, because 2 views certainly isn’t helping. But, there are reasons to like Sweethearts. … Continue reading Going In blind (Playing Catch Up): The Six Triple Eight, Sweethearts, Coup d’Chance, on Deadly Ground

The Small Screen Diaries- 03/14/25

TV News: Apple Plus inked a deal with Jason Sudekis to return for a 4th season of Ted lasso. Previously, the streamer had picked up cast options on at least three of the series regulars, Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein, and Jeremy Swift, so while nothing else is confirmed, the show should at least feature those four in some capacity. Also, Netflix has opted not to do a third season of The Recruit, which isn’t terribly surprising considering they reduced the episode order for the second season. Somehow, that worked out for The Diplomat, but typically a reduction of episodes leads … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 03/14/25
