Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F

Just like Top Gun came back after a long hiatus with its hero in the title, Beverly Hills Cop is back on the beat for a fourth entry, with most of Axel Foley’s name in the title. It a really odd and uncomfortable choice, and headed into this, I wasn’t sure that Netflix would be able to pull this off. Mark Malloy? A feature directorial debut? On this? This film had all the makings of another hot trash Netflix title that just gets put out to appease algorithms. After all, CBS has a quite high profile pilot for a TV … Continue reading Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F

Trigger Warning

I’m a believer in the idea that certain things can move the needle in a positive or negative direction. yes, there’s a core movie, but sometimes something stands out that is better or worse than the rest, and it is possible to move your feelings about that film just a little bit. For example, sitting through a movie you don’t really care for, only to find out that it secretly was headed to a mindfuck of an ending. That ending alone could sway you. Sometimes, because Netflix’s mold relies on one or two stars anchoring a project, the charisma of … Continue reading Trigger Warning

Atlas

Between this being her now, and sharing her greatest love story never told, this has certainly been ‘a year’ for Jennifer Lopez. I have no idea what is happening with her personal life, but I do actually hope she and Ben can figure this out.At bare minimum, they are actors, and you can’t drop a whole movie about your loe and then just split. But, what you can do is save the world from Shang Chi destroying human life as we know it. You can be a strong female lead who can never seem to find a good cup of … Continue reading Atlas

Rebel Moon Part II: The Scar Giver

And we’re back, as quickly as the Wachowski’s sent us into Revolutions after being Reloaded, we are once again sent back into whatever universe Rebel Moon is set in. It can’t be the Snyderverse, because fans already used that name for something else. It is hard to say that this is a disappointing sequel, because that would indicate that the first one was good. No, rather it is a continuation of disappointment, and grandstanding by a director who is exploiting his fan base for his own personal gain. Promising more Rebel moon, and teasing that all these versions have longer … Continue reading Rebel Moon Part II: The Scar Giver

The Beautiful Game

Often I find myself clicking on random titles just because they are trending or new, and have audio description. Such is the case with The Beautiful Game, which immediately gave me mixed emotions. The film is about the Homeless World Cup (yes, Homeless, the film uses that word), that we’ve apparently been doing for some years now, where the unhoused populations of participating countries come together to raise money/awareness for their being unhoused. I’m sure people find this inspiring, but I also think can’t we just figure out a way to help the unhoused without making them play soccer for … Continue reading The Beautiful Game

Spaceman

I remember last year seeing this film floating on some early Oscar lists. The guy who directed HBO’s excellent Chernobyl series was doing a drama with Adam Sandler, Carey Mulligan, Paul Dañó, and Isabella Rossellini. I was pretty hyped, and I had Sandler in my early Top 20. That was, of course, before Netflix pushed this to 2024. That’s OK, plenty of films have shifted before. Just last year, Killers Of The Flower Moon and The Holdovers got Oscar nominations after being shifted from the previous year. Then, March. Netflix decided on March. It’s Ok. So maybe not an Oscar … Continue reading Spaceman

Code Eight: Parts 1 and 2

Netflix has these frequent releases, and one of them was something called Code Eight: Part Two. Immediately, I was like… there was a Part One? How did I miss this? When did I miss this? Well, a few years back, Netflix decided to release a superhero themed original starring the Amells (Robbie and Stephen) and I guess it checked a metric for them. I never remember this happening. But at the speed it took for this sequel to come out answers the question of why we still haven’t seen that Old Guard sequel that was green lit. That means I … Continue reading Code Eight: Parts 1 and 2

The Small Screen Diaries- 01/13/24

The fourth episode of Squid Game: The Challenge (Netflix) just feels like filler. The audio description team, with Sri Gordon as narrator, is still doing solid work, but this episode was just a lot of dumb challenges. The only interesting one was having them vote off three people. That and the way they handled it was fine, and since we ended on a solid number, with 70 contestants remaining, it felt like that was where we needed to go. While I don’t know the results of the Jack In the Box game, it’s not everyone competing, and the fact that … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 01/13/24

Then, he brought 300 to life, and men can’t stop reminding people that this is Sparta! After that, all the feedback he got about using slow motion, color … Continue reading Rebel Moon: Part 1: A Child Of Fire

Family Switch

Where I watched It: Netflix English Audio Description Provided By: International Digital center Written By: Dakota Green Cast: Jennifer Garner, Ed Helms, Emma Myers, Brady Noon, and Rita Moreno. Written By: Victoria Strauss Directed By: McG Let’s hit that audio description first. Dakota Green’s script for the audio description is the smart way to go. Instead of trying to follow the absurdity of a six way Freaky Friday, she decides that when the character’s soul, if you will, moves from one body into another, after a little bit of explaining it, you realize that the character name has moved to … Continue reading Family Switch

Rustin

Where I Watched It: Netflix English Audio Description Provided By: International Digital Center Written By Dakota Green Narrated By Sri Gordon This time last year I was still eternally optimistic about Danielle Detweiler getting an Oscar nomination for her terrific work in Till. It seemed like the support for Till had been stripped down to just her commanding lead performance, but no matter, she delivered a powerhouse performance voters couldn’t turn away from. I forget that just because a black actor or actress delivers a terrific performance doesn’t necessarily mean they will end up on the final list. Flash forward … Continue reading Rustin

The Wonder

Where I watched It: Netflix Audio Description Provided By: international Digital Center written By: Dakota Green The audio description on this film was really good. All my issues with the movie lie within the story and decisions made by the screenwriter and director, not the narration. The film itself is bleak, the narration was very modest and respectful, and it managed to always keep a level approach to what some might consider a faith versus science film. It’s hard to know how much the character of Anna deteriorates in front of visual eyes, but she’s always somewhat mobile, so I’m … Continue reading The Wonder
