Box Office Predictions: 5/31-6/2- ‘Earth’ battles for the top spot

1) Fast and Furious 6- 45M weekend, 200M total

The franchise has been getting pretty good buzz. With such a huge opening, it’s almost impossible to not drop at least in half, which would leave it with about 45M this weekend, probably edging out After Earth and getting to keep the crown for a second weekend.

2) After Earth- 40M weekend

Will Smith is still a pretty huge draw in terms of box office. Last summer’s Men In Black 3 opened to 54M, Hancock did 62M, and I Am Legend did 77M. Granted, his box office has been slipping a little bit with each release, but those numbers can’t be ignored (and are all genre appropriate— Seven Pounds only did 14M). Will Smith isn’t being billed as the star, and it is clearly Jaden in the lead role, but his name will still bring his fans. Reviews will determine if After Earth can hold up in future weekends.

3) Now You See Me- 25M weekend

A magician heist film is great counterprogramming for the summer, and rather than relying on one major star, it has coupled a few well-known faces (Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Mark Ruffalo, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco) together for a film so they can all add up to one megastar. Reviews will let us know if this film has legs, but right now I think it has piqued interest.

4) Epic- 22M weekend, 65M total

Being the only kids film in the marketplace over the summer isn’t something to joke about. Even though Epic opened in 4th last week, it’ll hold really well in week two, and actually maintain its ranking.

5) Star Trek: Into Darkness- 20M weekend, 185M total

Star Trek didn’t dip 50% from week 1 to week 2, and it isn’t likely it will drop over 50% this week either. Another solid hold could cause it to actually surpass Hangover 3.

6) The Hangover 3- 18M weekend, 95M total

America doesn’t seem to have fallen in love with the newest entry in the Hangover franchise. A hard drop of 60% to about 18M could be in store, causing the comedy to drop from 2nd to 6th.

7) Iron Man 3- 11M weekend, 390M total

Still holding up well, Iron Man 3 is eyeing the 400M mark, and it should easily pass it.

8) The Great Gatsby- 9M weekend, 130M total

9) Mud- 1.5M weekend, 16M total

10) Frances Ha- 0.8M (if Frances Ha has another expansion this week, it could sneak into the top 10, as could potentially Before Midnight)
