This Week’s Anniversaries

Today we celebrate the 20th Anniversary of The River Wild, starring Kevin Bacon, Meryl Streep, and David Strathairn. It opened to 10.2M in 1st place, and went on to gross 46M domestically and 94M worldwide. It has a 55% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 6.3 on IMDB. Fun fact! Both Meryl Streep and Kevin Bacon were nominated for Golden Globes, but both were left cold when Oscar nominations were announced. Also, this was directed by a pre-LA Confidential Curtis Hanson.

It’s the 20th Anniversary of Ed Wood also. It opened on only 2 screens, and made 71K in the first week. It ended with 5.8M domestic, and two Oscars. One for Martin Landau, and one for Makeup. The Tim Burton directed masterpiece has a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 7.9 on IMDB.

This is the 15th Anniversary of Three Kings, which opened in 2nd with 15M on its way to 60M domestic and 107M worldwide. The George Clooney/Mark Wahlberg/Ice Cube flick was beloved by critics at 94%, and audiences with 7.2 on IMDB. It was the 39th highest grossing film of 1999.

This weekend is the 10th Anniversary of I Heart Huckabees, the indie smash that made 12.7 domestic and 20M worldwide. Critics liked it, with a 62% on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences liked it a bit more with a 6.8 on IMDB. Fun fact. David O’Russell directed this and Three Kings. He must like this weekend.

This is also the 10th anniversary of Shark Tale, the animated hit that made 160M domestically and 367M worldwide. Surprisingly, no sequel was made. It got a 36% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 6.0 on IMDB. It was the 11th highest grossing film of 2004. Also, Ladder 49 turns 10. It made 74M domestic and 100M worldwide. It had a 40% on Rotten Tomatoes and 6.5 on IMDB. It was the 38th highest grossing film of 2004.

Amid rumors a sequel is finally happening, Zombieland turns five. It opened in 1st with 24.7M, on its way to 75M domestic and 102M worldwide. It has a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 7.7 on IMDB. It was the 42nd highest grossing film of 2009.
