I think sometimes critics are just angry people who pick easy targets and agree to hate them. John Carter was not an awful movie, and The Lone Ranger is also not an awful movie. Don’t get me wrong, this is not a GREAT movie, it’s just an above average movie with some pretty cool special effects. Honestly? Westerns are hard. I don’t know why, but we seem to be not really doing many of them anymore, and when we do them… they aren’t great.
Johnny Depp brings his little touch of odd magic to the film, which makes it feel kinda special, and Armie Hammer is a decent rising star. William Fichtner is great at playing a villain, even a silly over the top villain. The film is bogged down by runtime, and a story that could have been trimmed to make more sense and flow better. I did enjoy the special effects, and Johnny Depp. I just feel like it was too long, and had a lot of filler that could have been cut.
Don’t allow critics to ruin your opportunity to see films that weren’t really made for critics to begin with. This is summer action done a little better than average.
