Actor Profile: John Leguizamo

I actually decided to do a few profiles today, since there are a handful of actors who meet the criteria (I try to pick actors who I have seen at least 10 of their roles). The first actor who is getting profiled is John Leguizamo.

The first film I saw him in was Super Mario Bros as a kid, obviously. My first Die Hard 2 viewing was as a kid, on cable TV, but I believe I had already seen Super Mario Bros.

BEST PERFORMANCE:
I feel like I haven’t seen John’s truly “Best Performance”, based on the list of films I’ve seen, versus the work of his that I haven’t seen. I seem to have seen most of his more commercial work, and less of his actual gritty acting, like in Summer of Sam or Empire. That being said, I have seen To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar and I have to say his performance as Chi-Chi is the standout in that film. Hands down.

MOST ICONIC PERFORMANCE
He’s probably best known as Sid The Sloth in the Ice Age franchise. Nothing else really comes close.

MOST UNDERRATED PERFORMANCE
I’m going to suggest you watch The Kill Point miniseries, because he was excellent in that. I actually got a chance to catch that when it aired, and thought it was way above the quality of something you’d expect to see on Spike TV. In case you think picking a TV show is a cop out, I’ll also suggest that he was really good in Chef even if all the focus was on Jon Faverau.

BEST PERFORMANCE I’VE HEARD WAS GOOD AND HAVEN’T SEEN
I already let the ball drop, but it’s Summer Of Sam. Heard he was great. Haven’t seen it.

WORST PERFORMANCE
You probably expected me to pick Super Mario Bros, but I’m not gonna. I’m instead going to remind you that he was in What’s The Worst That Could Happen with Martin Lawrence and Danny DeVito, a movie you probably forgot existed, as well as Righteous Kill which really squandered the use of Pacino and DeNiro. Neither was Leguizamo specifically awful in, but both films were pretty bad.

  2. Super Mario Bros (1993)
