An underappreciated gem. This film tanked at the box office. TANKED. It bombed despite having a 77% on Rotten Tomatoes. It is actually a really funny comedy, and I don’t know why people didn’t give it a chance. It’s on DVD now, and you should pick it up. It could be a cult classic.
The Lonely Island trio have made a movie that lampoon pop stars and the shitty music they make. It’s kind of the life they lead, where Samberg has broken out as the star of the trio, and they made a movie that parallels it. Samberg plays Connor4Real, who was once part of a terrible rap boyband trio, but broke out as a star.
The film chronicles the rise and fall and rise of Connor4Real. It uses a lot of celebrity cameos in a documentary format to tell the story. The real triumph here is the absolutely ridiculous music that Connor performs. Lonely Island has always made great music, and they’re doing it again here. I really want to download Donkey Roll now.
There’s tons of silly shit here, from Connor’s pet turtle, to his deal with a home appliance company, and his guitar wrangler Zippy, who likes to “flatline” in his spare time. They also perfectly send up TMZ. Who doesn’t want to see people make fun of TMZ?
Popstar is easily one of the funniest films of the year, and probably also the silliest. Definitely give this film a chance. You won’t regret it.
