The Too Much TV Roundup- 01/02/23

Well, it happened again. Netflix cancelled a show while I was watching it. Almost literally. A few hours later, I saw the breaking news that the show I just decided to continue had been cancelled. So, here are the 7 shows fighting for the top spot, and one of them is likely making their final appearance on this list.

7) 1899 (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

I think there might be a show here, but it’s slow getting started. I know they were slowly unraveling, as the captain was seeing his dead family, and the green beetles are obviously part of this mystery. It still has a big cast, and like the White lotus, there is no lead. however, I think this show would benefit from having a lead, as some characters don’t ahve names yet. Even by the second episode. I mentioned I struggled with the first episode and the audio description, because the dubbing was done with people who speak really good English, like it’s their native tongue, playing roles that are not English speaking, and that messes up the theme of having all these different groups who can’t understand each other. It’s hard to follow who can understand who when they all sound the same. I stand by the fact that casting actors with appropriate accents would have made sense here. A French actor who speaks English, but is playing a French character who does not, for example. Anyway, with Netflix’s cancellation, and this show ranking at the bottom of two lists, I’ll be using my time more wisely. I finished The imperfects, and I’m finishing The Midnight Club both after cancellation, but I have little desire to do so here. This is like when Apple cancelled Shantorum while I was still watching it.

Episode Grade: B-

6) The English (Amazon)

English Audio Description?: Yes

I’m not sure that this episode did anything wrong. i just have a group of shows that all ended up with about the same grade, and I think The English ended up at the bottom of that grouping simply because I liked the episode before this one more than this episode. So for me, it trended downward. Although, that character coming in at the end with that crazy name like he’s either some serial killer or weird comic book character was interesting. Episode 4 will likely swing the other way.

Episode Grade: B+

5) Yellowstone (Paramount)

English Audio Description?: no

This is where I needed audio description. it took me way too long to figure out that the opening sequence was in the past. I was so confused.

Episode Grade: B+

4) Emily in Paris (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Thank God, Emily is free now. You would think that would be a season finale type of decision, but it was a long time coming. When her boss started talking about putting the blame on Emily, she made the right call to walk. Plus, Emily In Chicago just feels like it won’t ahve the same ratings…

Episode Grade: A-

3) Titans (HBo MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

OK. I’m not sure where she came from. I’m more of a Marvel fan, but this Jinx character rocked my world. I hope she sticks around. The bump in ranking and grade level was all due to her. We still have the Smile villain walking around causing people to do self harm, and I’m not sure what’s going on with him.

Episode Grade: A-

2) Vampire Academy (Peacock)

English Audio Description?: Yes

in the literal least shocking development in TV history… Tatiana is a villain. It’s official now. The season finale looks to be nuts. And I felt so bad for Christian when he realized he was being used. This show really turned out to be great. That probably means peacock will cancel it like every other great show they have (Saved By The Bell, Girls5Eva, Rutherford Falls).

Episode Grade: A

1) Atlanta (FX/Hulu)E

Mulish Audio Description?: Yes

What a way to end Atlanta. I love the ambiguity of “It was all just a dream”. You don’t really get an answer straight up, and it’s left open to your interpretation. And that’s fantastic. I’ll miss this show. Donald Glover was a great writer, and i can’t wait for him to do another project.

Episode Grade: A+, Season Grade: A, Series Grade: A
