The Too Much TV Roundup- 01/06/23

I was trying to watch as many shows as kevin McCarthy needed rounds to become speaker, and i fell short. it took him 15 rounds, and I only managed 11 shows.

11) Irreverent (Peacock)

English Audio Description?: Yes

I need to stop watching random things on peacock. After the abysmal cop drama from a few weeks back, I checked this off my list. i remember, when TV Land was a thing, there was a sitcom on there about a guy who had to pretend he was a reverend. That reminded me so much of this show, except there’s a mob angle here, and it’s British. But it’s that predictably quirky small town British. I have seen so many shows that from what I can tell, if you don’t live in London, you’re likely certifiably insane. The trope of quirky small English towns is so overdone. I was bored, the cast wasn’t funny, and it immediately reminded me of a similar show that wasn’t even good enough for me to remember it’s title, but it was still better than this. This was better than The Calling, but I’m still one and done on this show.

10) Celebrity Jeopardy (ABC/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

It’s not that Jeopardy became less interesting to me, it’s that featuring those two girls, who are just barely famous against Michael Cera wasn’t fun. They got clobbered. Zoey Chou kept remarking on how bad of a Chinese person she was because she kept missing questions about Chinese culture. How many people said no for the casting directors to have chosen these two?

Episode Grade: C+

9) Rami (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Even after the way the last episode ended, we still found a way to pull focus away from Rami and onto other characters. I’m all about ensemble shows, but I really feel like this show changed in its third season, like Rami was hit with Covid, so they rewrote the season to feature him less, and suddenly writing stories for a supporting cast that has always just been supporting has been a truly odd experience. The first two seasons were strong, and somehow it really feels like the dynamic and formula has changed. And I don’t know why.

8) The Chase (ABC/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Another show that lost audio description after the winter break. James was supposedly missing from the Chasers in the booth, and that has me concerned. So for now, I’m going to drop it in the ranks a bit. no AD and no James gets you a…

Episode Grade: B-

7) Home Economics (ABC/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

The gang is back. There’s still that debate about whether or not the new guy is too hot to handle, and Connor meets a girl he likes that hates rich people, so he pretends to be poor.

Episode Grade: B

6) Avenue Q (HBo/ HBo MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

While I did enjoy the squabbling, especially about whether or not the danger was real or just visual effects, it somehow felt deflated and a bit chaotic than usual. The previous episode was that, and then ended the way it began, this episode just was chaos for chaos sake.

Episode Grade: B

5) One Of Us is lying (Peacock)

English Audio Description?: Yes

This show had been on a HUGE downturn for me, but handing the reigns over to Veronica, the girl who has been annoyingly turning this all into some YouTube sensation for the last two episodes was the best thing to happen to this series. It’s funny how the writers have crafted her until now, making you think she’s one way, but then taking a whole episode and centering it around her, and her investigating, was actually brilliant. I loved this episode, and I think it was the best episode of the season.

Episode Grade: A-

4) quantum Leap (NBC/ Peacock)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Ben basically was a bodyguard to a singer, but the behind the scenes drama involved tracking down Janice and getting some answers. And she was right. The better question is, if he had all of you guys, why did he turn to me? That is the question of the moment.

Episode Grade: A-

3) Ghosts ((CBS/ Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

I shall give Ghosts the benefit of the doubt to see where this show is headed with Freddie, but I thought he was annoying as hell, and if I have to deal with him on a regular basis… I’m not sure Ghosts will stay as high every week.

Episode Grade: A-

2) Mythic Quest (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

David is working on his movie, although… where is everyone else? Why is it just one dude making a movie? Where is his crew? Why aren’t there more people here? I have so many questions I’m not sure this show is ready to answer.

Episode Grade: A-

1) The Midnight Club (Netflix)E

Mulish Audio Description?: Yes

I’m interested in who the lucky one is, and the story of the week was really good even if I knew what was going on, but it was that reveal at the end… that’s the reveal that got me. What. The. Hell.

Episode Grade: A
