The Way Too Much TV Roundup- 01/14/23

I think I might have actually watched too much television.

15) The Sex lives Of College Girls (HBo MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

When you watch 15 different TV shows, you are bound to have erased one from your memory. I remember there being one of the girls trying to get into a hard class, and fighting with her mom on a call home about her not believing she could pass that class. The rest of this is a blur.

14) Echo 3 (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

So, I mentioned at about this grade level that on the first episode, I wanted to wait and see what was going on. Basically, this third episode ended with the death(?) of one of the characters that made the second episode better, and then just became kind of a jumbled mess of an action series where a rescue attempt doesn’t go as planned. I was so more interested last week, when it seemed like things were coming together, and then I thought we walked back into a mess. Then… I find out that’s the end of some chapter, so I have no clue what the next episode is.

Episode Grade: B-

13) The Mysterious Benedict Society (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

As more people experience happiness, some crazy lady who was a minor character in season 1 has kidnapped our little bundle of awesome to try and test a new machine and figure out why she was able to break the last one. Season 1 was great, season 2 has been a mess. I miss Ryan Hurst doing so much with so little dialogue. Hearing him talk so much is kind of jarring after watching him in Sons Of Anarchy, The Walking Dead, and the first season of this, all three where he barely spoke.

Episode Grade: B-

12) National Trasure (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

I still feel so bad for Catherine Zeta Jones. It’s not that this show is terrible… well… actually…. I mean. the cast here isn’t the problem. Let’s put it that way. I’m not even sure you couldn’t make a National Treasure series. but this? I’m still not convinced this is that series.

Episode Grade: B-

11) Firefly Lane (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

There are some shows that are really good with emotional material, and milking tears from the audiece. Firefly Lane, at least for me, is not one of them. There are moments I appreciate, and others where I just think the show veers into Virgin River territory of being some poorly written schlocky nonsense. But people like that. Just look at how well the new season of Ginny and Georgia is doing. This episode, centered around Heigl’s character hitting the date that her baby would have been born, wasn’t nearly as emotionally impactful. I’m not sure this kind of material is the best for Heigl. Can someone write her a legal drama?

Episode Grade: B

10) Home Economics (ABC/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Wow. This whole storyline about the new guy working and having thoughts about him is really sticking around. I thought that might be like a 1 or 2 episode commitment, but here we are on a third episode, still talking about it.

Episode Grade: B

9) The Chase (ABC/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

That one girl put in all the work, and that other guy just stood there. Then she has to split the money with him evenly, just because he survived his chase, and offered 40K, when she took the higher offer and most of that money is hers. He owes her so much.

Episode Grade: B

8) Slow Horses (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

As we move along in the second season, I’m reminded that this series can be tonally different in a matter of seconds. This spy thriller with a dash of absurdity is, like I said last week, an acquired taste. Was it just me, or was the second episode of the season longer than usual? Did it just feel that way?

Episode Grade: B+

7)

7) Ghosts (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

The idea of those two ghosts havin some kind of ghost sex was just… so interesting and hilarious, but the new guy has got to go. or do something else with him.

Episode Grade: B+

6) Inside Amy Schumer (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

OK. Most of the sketches worked here this week. I really loved the first one about the mixed family in the car commercial. But, the best sketches were the ones where black people sprayed themselves with white girl tears to get out of a ticket, and later be able to sell their house. When the cop asked them what they were doing, and they just started saying things that made no sense but just sounded really white, I was dead. The song… or whatever the episode ended with… that was unfortunate. I don’t know why Amy didn’t end on a big note, in what was essentially her best episode of the season so far.

Episode Grade: A-

5) Quantum Leap (NBC/Peacock)

English Audio Description?: Yes

I’m one of those people who didn’t believe a reboot could work, but this one is proving me mostly wrong. However, some episodes, the mystery back at the project just doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, and they have a hard time fitting a reason for all the series regulars to even be in an episode. I do notice that. But Ben playing a doctor trying to save patients after a trainwreck and be heard as a female doctor was a good storyline.

Episode Grade: A-

4) Tulsa King (Paramount Plus)E

English Audio Description?: Yes

The audio description on this show… I can actually hear when the dude went back and re-recorded certain voices in the opening credits. Like, when an episode has a different director, there’s a copy/paste thing with no quality control. I have no idea who is responsible for this, but they need to get out of the game. The episode, which saw the aftermath of what happens when his father finds out one of his guys raped his daughter while he was in jail, ended in the weirdest way. So, Chickee was told he couldn’t touch the daughter, so he goes after the boring husband? That’s like kicking a puppy. I hope he feels like a man now. Also, that biker gang sent ONE guy? ONE? Wow. They really don’t take him seriously.

Episode Grade: A-

3) From Scratch (Netflix)E

English Audio Description?: Yes

I think that I liked the first part a lot. From Scratch can really pull at your heartstrings while also throwing a lot into an episode. But, to see Zoe’s personality change, and the dynamic with Lito… I dunno how I felt about that. Well, i do, and that’s why this is in third with a minus.

Episode Grade: A-

2) The Peripheral (Amazon)E

English Audio Description?: Yes

After the first season of westworld and now this, I’m convinced Jonathan Nolan can knock a first season out of the park. If you’re going to ask me why this wasn’t at number one, the other show just had a ton of mic drop moments, and this one introduced a character who seemed to know everything, which made it a little less fun.

Episode Grade: A

11) Yellowstone (Paramount)En

English Audio Description?: No

The only show on the list without AD, and it wound up on top. I’m sorry guys. But this episode was just a long time coming for this show. It is so epic that the show is taking a little break before resuming the season. Jamie finally went too far, which seems crazy to say considering how far he’s gone before. But since he can’t see how he’s being used by the hired fixer, he throws everything away in a “I can’t take this back” way, so much so that Beth is actually willing to kill her brother, and John just might let her do it. That thought though crosses Jamie’s mind, who ALSO puts into motion a plan to kill off what might be coming to kill him. Someone isn’t surviving this season. That’s for damn sure.
