The Too Much TV Roundup- 01/28/23 REDUX

So, i labeled yesterday’s roundup as representing the 28th, when it represented the 27th. so, now I’m back in line with the correct day of the week. We’ve all been there, right?

11) The Mysterious Benedict Society (Disney plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Wow. 11 shows, and I felt the need to put this at the bottom. The sad thing is, I really enjoyed the first season, but watching this season near a close, with the happiness centers starting to have their effect, I realize that the first season was structured better, I was more interested in the plot, and Ryan Hurst was still doing his strong silent type. Now he’s got all sorts of dialogue. I’m Ok if Disney decides not to move forward with a third season. But, please keep Big Shot and Mighty Ducks. Thanks.

Episode Grade: C+

10) Firefly Lane (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Season 2 Episode 4, by the way, which ends with this overly dramatic reveal. I think the best part of the episode was the part I wasn’t supposed to like, when Heigl marched up to that guy and told him he didn’t need to be afraid of her, and he basically remembered her as being a trash panda. OMG. Brutal.

Episode Grade: C+

9) The Sex Lives Of College Girls (HBo MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

OK. Hear me out. So this show will eventually need to graduate its cast and face the problem that Grown-ish has, and the reason I and a few of my friends stopped watching. So, why not just stop talking about everyone’s grade levels and leave them in college forever. Make the college year ambiguous, their experiences universal, and you can retain the cast. Also, as repayment for the producers obviously loving my idea, I’d like them to absorb the cast of Gossip Girl. Is that too much to ask?

Episode Grade: B-

8) Dragon Age Origins (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

So, there are moments that this worked, but if I’m being honest, it was so close to the formula for The Legend Of Vox Machina, that it made me wish I could speed foraward and cut this show loose, and start into that. I just might. I was never a huge fan of the Dragon Age games, having only ever played one. So, this is not really a loss. Maybe Dragon Age fans will like it more than me.

Episode Grade: B-

7) Treason (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

I feel like I’m forcing myself to love this show, and I’m not really sure why. It’s just a limited series, and I can’t watch every episode twice.

Episode Grade: B

6) Mayor Of Kings Town (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

So, like an assload of people died in that prison riot, and you’re telling me that Jeremy Renner’s number one concern right now is gang violence, and not like a thousand reporters roaming his town? I feel like the lack of media presence after this event is so unrealistic. There would have been non-stop news coverage. Reporters would be falling out of trees. Taylor Sheridan typically knows what he’s doing, but he basically wrote Attica on speed and somehow he wants to convince me that the mass media wouldn’t be all over this. Bullshit. Sorry, Taylor, but that’s just bullshit.

Episode Grade: B

5) East New York (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

One of those rotation weeks where the AD was off. I’m also an episode behind still I believe. But I do love this show, and how it’s trying to do something different. The dancer on the subway tracks went somewhere unexpected, but the union rep is going to be a problem, and I have a feeling we’re not done with that storyline. If you told me at the beginning of the season I’d still be watching this, i would have laughed. This was a show that before I watched it, I expected to just be watching the pilot. Not true.

Episode Grade: A-

4) American auto (Peacock)

English Audio Description?: Yes

So glad this show is back. It took me a hot second to remember the cast, but I think this might be NBC’s strongest sitcom (though I do need to watch Night Court still).

Episode Grade: A

3) New Amsterdam (NBC/Peacock)E

English Audio Description?: Yes

Second to last episode sets everything up nicely for a clean exit. I’m sad this show got only five seasons, but at least it basically retained its cast the whole time. I’d rather watch something that manages to keep its players than to be looking at Grey’s Anatomy in Season 19 where they seriously think they should be making a season without Meredith, just because they still have Bailey and Richard from the original cast. Come on now.

Episode Grade: A

2) Tulsa King (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

I love how ignorant the head of the biker gang is. He gets a phone call telling him ATF raided his place, and his biggest concern is still the guy who isn’t even trying to come for him. Priorities man. I can’t wait for that guy to get eaten by a lion or whatever in the season finale. Also, that cliffhanger though.

Episode Grade: A

1) The Good Doctor (ABC/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

What a beautiful and emotional return. With Leah in crisis, all Sean can do is keep thinking of ways in his head to help her, but he has to trust a now walking lin and his surrogate father to do the actual saving. It kind of came down to a beautiful moment where Sean is just sitting there, with everyone around him, and a nice fake out from the producers. This was a terrific return back from hiatus.
