The Too Much TV Roundup- 02/09/23

So Bob Iger is OK with going either route on keeping Hulu or selling it. It’s funny how Bob Chappick talked about one day integrating Hulu fully into Disney Plus, so your kids can watch Bluey and The Handmaid’s Tale, and iger is just so indifferent. While Disney Plus has managed to host a handful of their R rated product, to assume that selling Hulu and suddenly uploading a ton of adult content to Disney Plus is necessarily the right call is a big leap. Although, Disney Plus has a better rate of audio description than hulu, so perhaps if hulu died, more titles would have audio description?

8) Will Trent (ABC/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Well, that’s a quick way to lose me as a fan. Pull the audio description. The pilot was OK. I don’t actually like the title character yet, though he seems to be good at his job. It’s odd to have a detective who can’t read. Like, is that what makes him special? In the pantheon of Columbo’s and monk’s, this guys quirk is that he’s illiterate? I’m not in love with this show. I’ll probably do one more episode next week. if they bring back audio description, maybe we can turn this around. if not, there are definitely better shows to watch, and this really feels like something ABC will be cancelling.

Episode Grade: C+

7) National Treasure: Edge Of Tomorrow (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Oh lord. Corporate synergy. I love when Orin has to sit down and talk in depth about the relationship between Captain America and The Winter Soldier, as he tries to make Tasha feel better. But, mostly, I think I wasn’t impressed by the show’s lack of commitment in running with the “Wait. Is Billie actually good?” Apparently, that was a story arc worth one whole episode. And now our dreamer has to leave the country… dammit.

Episode Grade: C+

6) Velma (HBo MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

This divisive show just needs to be funnier… and possibly make more sense. Broad humor is applied here, but it also very much wants that Adult Swim crowd. I don’t hate it, but it so far hasn’t really impressed me. And this Norville character running around… where’s Shaggy? Does he become Shaggy? If not, he must be the killer. He has way too much screentime for a character that ultimately doesn’t matter.

Episode Grade: B-

5) Name That Tune (FOX/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Sometimes, when someone misses a really easy song, I just shake my head. Stand By Your Man? Come on. That was a softball pitch.

Episode Grade: B

4) Welcome To Chippendales (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

The episode where the murder actually occurs. Although, if this is really how it went down, they were making out, he suddenly needed to use the bathroom, and in the time it took Andrew Rannells to pee, a hitman entered the facility, shot Nick, didn’t look for anyone else, and just left? That’s a hell of a lot of luck. It’s almost like the producers of the show wanted to plant this scenario in your head because someone in the writers room wanted some shenanigans. Bradford had no motive. Why did we see it play out in the weirdest way possible? However, there’s some great acting in this episode from basically everyone.

Episode Grade: A-

3) The Connors (aBC/Hulu)

English Audio description?: Yes

Not a huge fan about Dan’s diet. John Goodman has struggled with his weight over the years, and I know he’s dropped a lot of weight. Selling the idea that Dan can eat like that, and not have a heart attack this season, well… let’s just say… I think that’s where we are headed. Points to Laurie Metcalf for landing the one dramatic moment of the episode.

Episode Grade: A-

2) Truth Be Told (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

My first reaction to this episode as it happened was “this girl got kidnapped twice?”, and that plot point seemingly overshadowed the point poppy was trying to make about how white girls always get national attention when they go missing, and black girls don’t. But… twice? Then, just as i was starting to pull away, we had that excellent scene in the gym where the Principal catfished a girl in front of her mother to prove a point, and the girl practically ran to the gym. That Karen just found out her daughter is dumb, and that was a great moment in television.

Episode Grade: A

1) Quantum Leap (NBC/Peacock)

English Audio Description?: Yes

So, I was already a fan of this episode for tackling this issue to begin with. But then it had to throw that shocking info drop at the end, and that’s when i knew… this was winning the day. And it was the first thing I saw. nothing else stood a chance. A great hour of television tackling trans athletes, trans issues, and then coming in with that right hook at the end. I’m going all in.

Episode Grade: A+
