The Too Much TV Roundup- 04/15/23

Saturday is not a strong day for TV news. So I watched 11 shows instead.

11) Hello Tomorrow (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Just when I thought the show was getting good, it starts deviating in the opposite direction. I think this episode, revealing that essentially the emperor is full of shit, comes at an odd time in the season. Eleven shows, and honestly I just watched stronger material.

Episode Grade: B-

10) history Of The World Part 2 (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

The Underground Railroad segment was funny, but like most sketch based shows, this is still very hit or miss, and also still doesn’t feel like Mel Brooks. That Anastasia segment was dumb.

Episode Grade: B-

9) The Legend Of Vox Machina (Amazon)

English Audio Description?: Yes

I assumed we were done at 10 episodes like most series, but apparently not. That means that instead of having that great Scanlon cliffhanger, it was resolved in the next episode. And rather in the least interesting way possible. Then, they go to battle, and it felt like we were stretching this season out, and ignoring things that could have been an interesting way to get people excited for a third season.

Episode Grade: B

8) Abbott Elementary (ABC/hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

I did watch the most recent episode. But 11 shows and two movies in yesterday, and I can’t remember what happened here. I don’t feel comfortable going lower than this, as I know this show wouldn’t have gone lower.

Episode Grade: B

7) Star Trek Picard (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

This is all about fan service. so many familiar faces came back. But… didn’t the last episode kill off Worf? I totally feel like there was a battle scene, where he died. And now he’s here again. I definitely missed something. Then again, how the episode ends with that Picard revelation, maybe that has something to do with it.

Episode Grade: B+

6) So help Me Todd (CBS/Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

This episode centered around a mysterious death at a hospital definitely had a solid twist, but that cross examination with Allison got a bit ridiculous. And this woman wonders why she’s not immediately the first contender for partner.

Episode Grade: B+

5) Ghosts (CBS/Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Was i supposed to remember who that headless ghost was? Cause I totally did not. Not that there wasn’t a lot of other hilarious stuff to work with here, including a great scene from jay’s perspective where things escalate quickly because he can’t hear the ghosts.

Episode Grade: A-

4) Truth Be Told (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Finding out that the danger may run deeper was an interesting twist. But, Poppy being totally read for being a podcaster who did a segment that put a kid in jail, only to do a segment getting him out of jail and making her look like a hero, was so scathing. Poppy needed to hear that. Because THAT was truth being told.

Episode Grade: A-

3) Shrinking (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Jason Segal had a lot of great moments here, but it’s actually amazing how they are able to milk the humor from Harrison Ford’s eternally grumpy psychiatrist. The whole Kevin thing was hilarious.

Episode Grade: A-

2) Your honor (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

This integration of Showtime into Paramount Plus is going terribly. But the penultimate episode of your Honor, which really set up a lot of things perfectly, was solid. I loved the courtroom scenes, and the moments between Bryan Cranston and michael Stuhlbarg are a masterclass in things left unsaid.

Episode Grade: A

1) Poker Face (Peacock)

English Audio Description?: Yes

That’s not how I expected the season finale would go. Maybe Charlie should take that job offer. The first one. That would have shielded her from the second one. I can’t wait for the second season. This is easily one of the best new shows of the year.

Episode Grade: A, Season 1 Grade: A
