Just like last year, I’m compiling a list of films across the streaming services that I recommend this Spooky Season. I will also be watching and reviewing some new films. It’s possible that some titles are repeated from last year, as some titles are exclusive to streaming services. Today, I’m starting with peacock, which is universal’s streaming service, but has a disturbingly low amount of Universal titles available with audio description. My goal is to recommend films with audio description, and if I can get 10 good films all with AD on a service, I won’t need filler. However, some services might have horror titles I wouldn’t recommend, or titles I haven’t seen. With that in mind, Peacock does have a few other titles that qualify with audio description, but I just didn’t think were any good, like Escape The Field and They/Them. So, here are four with audio description and six without. Although, one pick of the four is technically eight films.
1) Wrenfeld
Audio Description?: Yes
This Nicolas Cage vampire comedy is still listed on the Audio Description project as of Oct 1st. While it won’t scare you (though it might scare kids), it is super violent, and the gore is a big part of the season. Plus, Nicolas Cage plays Dracula, which is worth the price of admission alone.
2) Arachnophobia
Audio Description?: Yes
I always find it so odd that this film is on Peacock as one of the few titles with audio description that predates the streaming service. It appears to actually be the oldest title available with audio description, as the film was released in 1993. I’m pretty sure this is PG-13, and this creature feature is pretty good goosebumps for maybe the 10 and up crowd. John Goodman’s performance in this is still memorable to me.
Sick
Audio Desccription?: Yes
This slasher from early in the year was a pleasant surprise, and while it may irritate some, I enjoyed how it worked the pandemic in, and made the most of having a small cast. It’s a slasher film, set mostly in a cabin in the woods.
4) The Harry Potter Films
Audio Description?: Yes
Peacock is home to the entire Harry Potter universe with audio description. Witches and Wizards definitely fall under the umbrella of costumes kids pick for Halloween, not to mention the various monsters, epic fights, and general badassery by Potter and his friends. Celebrate this season by showing off your house colors.
5) Halloween
Audio Description?: no
Peacock is hosting the 2018 requel of the franchise that brought Jamie Lee Curtis back in a fantastic performance. I hate both of the sequels to this, but David Gordon Green got the first one right. It’s gory, it’s serious, and Curtis is at her very best.
6) Get Out
Audio Description?: No
funny story, i just saw this advertised with audio description in September on Tubi, so it’s hilarious that peacock has it now without. jordan Peele’s modern classic is a film I’ve revisited already a few times, and it has some great performances, and unexpected twists for the few people who still haven’t seen this film. If you can find it with audio description, go for it. If you can still see and haven’t done Get Out yet, why not?
7) Saw
Audio Description?: No
The original. I’ve heard Saw X was good, but most of these films are just excuses for gore porn. The first film has those moments, but with one of the more memorable twists in film history. I remember when this came out in theatres, and the word of mouth was nuts. There really wasn’t a star in this, so it was all about that ending, and it was the film everyone had to see. Arguably, it’s a film of cinematic importance, as it spawned a mini movement of torture porn and copycats like Hostel.
8) Psycho
Audio Description?: no
Universal needs to get on some of their classics. Why doesn’t Psycho have audio description? This is the Hitchcock original, and I shouldn’t even have to explain why it deserves a top 10 spot. This film revolutionized and changed everything. Hitchcock is responsible for the first toilet flush in film history. He was not a fan of the Hayes Code.
Zombieland
Audio Description?: No
I don’t hate the sequel, but the original is still great, and all four leads are Oscar nominees. hell, Bill Murray is an Oscar nominee. This film has Oscar’s all over it. check out the rules, and sign up for your first zombie kill.
10) Ghostbusters
Audio Description?: no
it isn’t Halloween if I don’t recommend Ghostbusters somewhere. This is the original, which is still the greatest of the whole series (though I would give thumbs up to all four films). It’s just a cool series, and culturally significant. Sure, I’ll go with that. Who are you gonna call?
Let’s be honest, those six movies I picked are not obscure, and there’s no reason Peacock shouldn’t be hosting their audio description. time to scare the turkey off it’s lazy ass and tell them to upload some audio description, especially for their own titles. Why have your own streaming service if you can’t do at least that?
