My second streaming service to get the treatment this year. I did Peacock last weekend, and now MAX. I plan on trying to fill the list with films that have audio description, but if i can’t hit 10 titles, I will fill in at the end, with some great movies that don’t have audio description but probably should. Just because I didn’t list it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. There are films on the service that would qualify that I haven’t seen (still waiting for HBO to put audio description on the first Annabelle before i watch the sequels), as well as films I didn’t like (Cujo, to name one). So sit back, and let’s get spooky.
1) Barbarian
Audio Description?: Yes
MAX is currently home to this absolutely bonkers horror title from last year. it certainly was something unexpected and different, and it is divisive. But, it is likely to make any new viewer’s jaw drop.
2) Fantastic beasts
Audio Description?: Yes
The whole series has audio description, and i do like to have a title on here that is family friendly. Really, I only thought the first film was worth watching, and just elements of the next two. Mostly Jacob. Jacob deserves his own series.
3) Evil Dead Rise
Audio Description?: Yes
From earlier this year, this is another bananas entry. From the opening sequence, the movie lets you know you are in for it. it’s an Evil Dead film, which is enough warning, but there are no rules. Anyone and everyone are in danger, and the deadites are bringing the gore this Halloween.
4) Harry Potter
Audio Description?: Yes
MAX also has the Harry Potter series just like peacock, so if your kids keep running around like witches and wizards, maybe it’s time to expelliamus them onto the couch for a massive movie marathon.
5) Hereditary
Audio Description?: Yes
I’m not a giant fan of this film, but it has good acting, it’s disgusting, and generally accepted by most to be a modern horror classic. I think it’s a bit overrated, but only because people think this is touched by God or something. it’s fine. It’s definitely disturbing enough for a gore lover who still hasn’t seen it.
6) It
Audio Description?: Yes
We will just assume this is part 1. Part 1 is very much worth watching, and is one of the best horror films I’ve seen in the last ten years. The cast of kids, the pacing, everything about the film was unexpected. it’s probably one of those rare occasions where the horror film deserved an Oscar nomination. At least the recognition of a nomination.
7) Signs
Audio Description?: Yes
I consider this to be a top 3 M Night Shyamalan film. I remember the first time I watched it, and the jump scares were totally earned (except that damn dog), and I totally respect that. It’s a great film, and it has audio description.
8) Sleepy hollow
Audio Description?: Yes
Tim Burton is a great person to have on your Halloween list, and the legend of Sleepy hollow and the headless horseman is perfect for the season as well. It’s gory, bloody, and a lot of fun. Decapitations abound!
9) The Cabin In The Woods
Audio Description?: Yes
A little bit funny, and a little bit scary, this film leans in on the horror tropes and delivers a fully memorable third act. Drew Goddard absolutely delivered, and if you want a lighter scary film, this one has a few laughs, and Chris Hemsworth.
10) The Conjuring
I added this last year as part of my onslaught on spooky titles. The first one is a true masterclass in direction, with the tension building for a long time before ever going for a real jump scare. It’s all mood and themes. the second one isn’t that bad, but it doesn’t have the finesse, and the third one is a waste of time in my opinion.
And, that’s all ten with audio description. No filler. i could have made the list longer, and I could ahve swapped some titles, but i like the mix. Gory and scary, with some comedy, and family friendly. MAX actually has a solid selection this October.
