The Too Much TV Roundup- 11/05/23

Did you remember, remember the 5th of November? Maybe? No? Well, lawmen launched yesterday on Paramount Plus, becoming the 3rd technical spinoff from Yellowstone, and another notch on Taylor Sheridan’s belt.

4) Shining Veil (Starz)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Unknown

I did try and make it through season 1, and it was a challenge. This is like a horror comedy, and there are a lot of elements you miss. But the performances from Courtney Cox and Greg Kinnear are just so damn good. I miss most of the references, but sometimes they just launch into a tirade, or the story comes up with some totally random shit, and I giggle. I think i would actually like this show if it had audio description, but I mostly just acknowledge its presence, all the while hoping Starz wakes up one day and adds audio description.

Episode Grade: Unwatchable

3) Neon (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Feels Like Something Netflix Would Cancel

I’m not sure what the appeal here is, and neon kinda landed flat, but it does speak to perhaps a population that lacks shows they want to watch on TV. It’s presented as a half hour, but it’s not a laugh out loud sitcom. It’s a single-cam that follows an aspiring musician, who thinks he’s gotten a break when a label shows interest in him. But what he doesn’t know, is that the person at the label showing interest is just an assistant. It’s not really bad or good, it just kind of exists. I wish that thematically it made stronger choices to push itself more like a comedy or a drama, especially in these beginning episodes as it establishes itself. There’s a place for a show like this, but not one that is trying to be neither comedic or dramatic.

Episode Grade: C

2) Our Flag Means Death (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not yet Renewed

The fan favorite is back, and it’s been too damn long. I enjoyed the return of these characters, and Rhys Darby’s hilarious performance, but watching and jumping right into Season 2 made me realize how many of the supporting cast I forgot even existed. I literally didn’t remember some of these various pirates. It’s just been a little too long, and even though I got a recap before the season started, it’s not audio described. Not sure if that would help, but lets try and close the gap between seasons.

Episode Grade: B+

1) Upload (Amazon)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Unknown

This show fared better as it is the third season, not the second, and the ensemble cast was smaller. Though, even with that, there was one guy I couldn’t remember who they were or why they were there.Ivan? I’m just happy Amazon stuck with this show because I always liked it, and assumed Amazon would cancel it like they do almost every other show I feel passionate about. (RIP The Peripheral, Paper Girls, Night Sky, and A League of Their Own).
